Al’ona

Amsterdam, Jun 2026

I took Ike's pregnancy course at House of Balance. It covered theory about pregnancy and delivery plus some practical things and exercises, and it was very useful with a very nice atmosphere. Every class, Ike asked how it was going with everyone, and after the delivery she answered my questions, sent tips and a few addresses for treatments, very helpful during and after. Communication was easy and always accessible, they were on time, and the price felt fair for Amsterdam.

Onno helped us buy our first house outside our home country. He was super helpful and transparent, told us to wait a little longer so my partner could build more tax history, then guided us through every step, from viewing places to saying when a house’s value didn’t look right for the area. He translated things we didn’t understand in Dutch, answered our emails fast, and either he or someone from the office would follow up so we didn’t miss anything. Price felt fair and actually lower than I expected.

I’m so happy with Lindsey as my English teacher. She is nice, very responsible, and very professional, and every time she was very patient with my English and helped me a lot with everything, even the details. Before, I tried several teachers from different countries, but I feel lucky to study with her and I kept studying with her for a long time because the price felt good. She’s a really nice person, and I already introduced her to my friend too.

Important to know

Most people in Amsterdam speak excellent English, so finding someone you can talk to is rarely the hard part. The paperwork is where it gets awkward, because the quote, the contract and the invoice usually arrive in Dutch. Two things are worth knowing before you book anything. First, check whether a price includes BTW. The rate is 21% on most work, though labour on a home more than two years old is taxed at 9%, and so are sports and fitness classes, so the same job can be quoted three different ways. Second, every legitimate Dutch business has a KvK number from the Chamber of Commerce, and you can look it up free in the public register. For gas, heating and electrical work there are extra schemes worth asking about, mainly SCIOS and InstallQ. Anyone who will not give you a written quote or a KvK number is telling you something useful.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do businesses get listed on Locallista in Amsterdam?
Every business is screened before it appears, and it stays listed on the strength of its reviews. Ranking is based on what people who used the business actually said, not on who paid for placement. Businesses cannot buy their way up the list.
Are the reviews real?
Yes. Every review is phone-verified, which means we confirm the person actually used the business before the review goes live. That is slower than letting anyone post, and it is the reason the ratings here are worth reading.
Do I need to speak Dutch to get things done in Amsterdam?
For talking to people, almost never. Nearly everyone you deal with will switch to English without being asked. Written Dutch is the real gap: quotes, contracts, insurance terms and letters from the gemeente or the Belastingdienst are usually Dutch only. Ask for a written quote and run anything you are unsure about through a translation before you sign it.
Are prices in Amsterdam quoted with or without BTW?
Check, because it varies. A price quoted to a consumer should already include BTW, and most trades show it that way, but plenty of price lists are still written excluding it. Look for the word inclusief or exclusief next to the figure before you compare two quotes, and ask whether travel costs and parking are in there too.
How do I check a business is properly registered?
Ask for the KvK number and look it up in the Chamber of Commerce register, which is free and public. It tells you the business exists, what it is registered to do, and how long it has been trading. For gas, heating and electrical work, ask about SCIOS or InstallQ certification as well.
What does it cost to use Locallista?
Nothing. Reading reviews, comparing prices and getting in touch with a business are all free, and a free account is all you need to see contact details.
