I’m so happy with Lindsey as my English teacher. She is nice, very responsible, and very professional, and every time she was very patient with my English and helped me a lot with everything, even the details. Before, I tried several teachers from different countries, but I feel lucky to study with her and I kept studying with her for a long time because the price felt good. She’s a really nice person, and I already introduced her to my friend too.

I’ve been at A'DAM.works since August last year, started with a flex desk for 2 months and then switched to a fixed desk. I really like the community and the space: great amenities, nice location, always clean, great coffee, fresh fruit, and clean dishes. Communication is easy, I have a direct WhatsApp and Nienke and the team reply quickly, and when I once had an invoice issue the finance team got back to me fast. The only downside is the call boxes can be a bit dark, and the price is on the higher side but feels fair for the community and location.

Adham did very well. He responded to my call quickly and handled a seemingly difficult lock in a couple of minutes, and he was a very friendly guy. He did a very good job keeping me updated with time, and I was happy with the price, especially since it was the weekend. I would absolutely hire him again and recommend him to family and friends.

What to know about education & lessons in Amsterdam

Amsterdam makes it very easy to avoid learning Dutch, which is exactly why people stall for years. Everyone switches to English the moment they hear an accent. Courses here are usually sold per level rather than per hour, so compare what a whole level costs rather than an hourly rate. Ask your employer too, since a lot of companies will pay for lessons and people simply never ask.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it worth learning Dutch if everyone speaks English?
For daily life you can manage without it. For paperwork, contracts, your children's school and feeling less like a visitor, it changes things. Start before you convince yourself it is too late.
How are language courses priced?
Per level or per block of lessons, not per hour. A group course is much cheaper per hour than one-to-one, and intensive weeks cost considerably more. Many schools offer a free intake or level check, so use it.
Are prices in Amsterdam quoted with or without BTW?
Check, because it varies. A price quoted to a consumer should already include BTW, and most trades show it that way, but plenty of price lists are still written excluding it. The rate is 21% on most work, though labour on a home more than two years old is taxed at 9%, and so are sports and fitness classes.
How do I check a business in Amsterdam is properly registered?
Ask for the KvK number and look it up in the Chamber of Commerce register, which is free and public. It tells you the business exists, what it is registered to do and how long it has been trading. Anyone who will not give you that number is telling you something useful.
How are businesses ranked here?
On their reviews, and every review is phone-verified, which means we confirm the person actually used the business before it goes live. Nobody can pay to move up the list.
How much do english teachers cost in Amsterdam?
A private English tutor in Amsterdam costs about €30 to €60 an hour in person, from €19.50 online, and a group course runs €219 to €380.
How much do dutch language schools cost in Amsterdam?
Dutch courses in Amsterdam are priced per level, about €471 to €625 for 13 lessons and an exam, while private one to one lessons run €50 to €100 an hour.
