I’m so happy with Lindsey as my English teacher. She is nice, very responsible, and very professional, and every time she was very patient with my English and helped me a lot with everything, even the details. Before, I tried several teachers from different countries, but I feel lucky to study with her and I kept studying with her for a long time because the price felt good. She’s a really nice person, and I already introduced her to my friend too.

I’ve been at A'DAM.works since August last year, started with a flex desk for 2 months and then switched to a fixed desk. I really like the community and the space: great amenities, nice location, always clean, great coffee, fresh fruit, and clean dishes. Communication is easy, I have a direct WhatsApp and Nienke and the team reply quickly, and when I once had an invoice issue the finance team got back to me fast. The only downside is the call boxes can be a bit dark, and the price is on the higher side but feels fair for the community and location.

I got some help from Monica during a very busy period, with a lot of family stuff and work stuff piling on. It was really useful to be able to voice what I needed outside of everything, and she was there to hear it out, be a sounding board, and help me reframe things and approach the anxiety that comes when life stuff piles on at the same time. She created a very calming environment and did not dismiss anything, which I really liked. Also, being an expat with family far away, she really understood that and helped me reframe certain things.

What to know about mental health & therapy in Amsterdam

The Dutch system routes almost everything through your huisarts, and knowing that saves a lot of confusion when you arrive in Amsterdam. With a referral, care inside the basisverzekering is billed to your insurer and what you actually pay is your eigen risico, the annual deductible. Without a referral, or with a practitioner your insurer has no contract with, you pay per session yourself. Coaching sits outside insurance entirely. English-speaking therapists are common in Amsterdam, so language is rarely the obstacle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?
For insured care, yes. Your huisarts is the gateway, and the referral is what lets the care be billed to your insurer. You can always go privately without one, but then you pay the session rate yourself.
What is the difference between a psychologist and a coach here?
Insurance, mostly. Psychological care can be reimbursed with a referral and is a regulated profession. Coach is not a protected title in the Netherlands and coaching is never covered. If what you need is clinical, start at the huisarts.
Are prices in Amsterdam quoted with or without BTW?
Check, because it varies. A price quoted to a consumer should already include BTW, and most trades show it that way, but plenty of price lists are still written excluding it. The rate is 21% on most work, though labour on a home more than two years old is taxed at 9%, and so are sports and fitness classes.
How do I check a business in Amsterdam is properly registered?
Ask for the KvK number and look it up in the Chamber of Commerce register, which is free and public. It tells you the business exists, what it is registered to do and how long it has been trading. Anyone who will not give you that number is telling you something useful.
How are businesses ranked here?
On their reviews, and every review is phone-verified, which means we confirm the person actually used the business before it goes live. Nobody can pay to move up the list.
How much do coaching cost in Amsterdam?
Coaching in Amsterdam costs about €75 to €150 a session for personal work and €150 to €350 for executive coaching, with multi-session tracks running €400 to €2,500.
How much do mental health professionals cost in Amsterdam?
With a huisarts referral, therapy in Amsterdam is covered by your basic insurance and you pay only the €385 eigen risico, while paying privately costs about €150 to €180 per 60 minutes.
How much do psychologists cost in Amsterdam?
An Amsterdam psychologist charges about €97 to €115 a session privately, while care after a huisarts referral is billed to your insurer and costs you only your eigen risico.
