I met Yonat at her exhibition, loved her style, and after we bought our apartment we wanted a piece that would be ours. I worked with her on the concept and she created a custom painting that now hangs in our living room, and we’re very happy with it. There were some delays on our side because we moved to a new house, but on her side everything was great - timing and communication were smooth. Price felt fair at the time, and I think it’s higher today.

I commissioned a huge custom painting for a specific wall in my white house - about a meter by two or three - because I wanted something big and powerful to occupy the whole wall. She listened to me a lot and we had a very fluid conversation throughout the creative process, and she was transparent about timing even when there were peaks of demand. I love that she is multifaceted, attentive to what is happening in the world, experimenting with techniques and even AI, and there is a real research work behind what she does - she reads a lot and brings that into the piece. The price felt fair and she let me pay in parts, and I feel very privileged with the result and would happily work with her again.

I bought a painting from Yonat’s existing collection in Barcelona after meeting her in person. I loved how she works with NFTs and also traditional oil painting - that mix of the modern world in a really traditional format just clicked for me. She was super communicative, punctual, and fast, answered my questions, showed me other pieces, and even talked about a future project I’m now waiting to see unfold. It felt very personal to buy directly from the artist, and the price felt really good, honestly could charge more.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose a reliable artistic painter in Barcelona as an expat?
As an expat, shortlist English-speaking mural painters with portfolios matching your style (e.g., decorative, graffiti, trompe l’oeil). Check recent reviews, request two local references, and confirm experience with similar surfaces. A written proposal with sketches, materials, timeline and aftercare shows professionalism and helps you compare like-for-like.
How much does a custom mural cost in Barcelona?
Prices vary by size, complexity, access and surface prep. As a guide, many Barcelona muralists quote €50, €150 per m²; small indoor pieces may range €300, €1,200, while large feature walls can exceed €1,500, €6,000. All pricing is set by each artist and handled directly with them; ask for a detailed written quote.
How long does a mural project take from brief to completion?
Concept design typically takes 3, 10 days, including mood boards and a sketch for approval. Painting ranges from 1, 3 days for a small interior to 1, 2 weeks for larger, detailed work, plus drying and ventilation. Allow extra time for access, scaffolding, and building approvals where required.
Do I need permission to paint a mural in Barcelona?
Interior murals in private homes usually need no permit, but renters should obtain written landlord consent. Exterior or community-area walls often require homeowners’ association approval and, in some districts, municipal permits and scaffolding licences. Always confirm building rules and quiet hours before scheduling a mural painter in Barcelona.
What paints and finishes work best for Barcelona’s climate and interiors?
For interiors, low-VOC acrylics or mineral paints provide durability with good ventilation; bathrooms benefit from mould-resistant products. Exteriors need UV-stable, weatherproof paints and, where appropriate, anti-graffiti or protective varnish. Ask your artistic painter about primers, sealers and the exact brand/system they recommend for your wall type.
How should I brief an English-speaking artistic painter and manage revisions?
Share clear measurements, surface photos, inspirational images, brand colours (RAL/Pantone), budget and deadline. Agree the number of design revisions, two rounds is common, and approve a colour sketch before painting. Most Barcelona mural painters coordinate via WhatsApp or email and confirm changes in writing to avoid surprises.
What should be included in a mural quote or contract?
Ensure it covers scope, dimensions, materials, surface preparation, access requirements, timeline, working hours and aftercare. Ask for details on design ownership/licensing, number of revisions, snagging, and cancellation terms. A deposit (often 30, 50%) is typical; payments are arranged directly with the artist against invoices.
Can I install a mural in a rental flat and what happens when I move out?
Yes, with your landlord’s written approval specifying restoration terms. Many decorative painters can prime and repaint to the original colour on move-out, or design removable panels. Clarify who covers repainting costs, and keep the quote and colour codes to ensure a smooth handover.
How can I check the quality and reliability of a Barcelona mural painter?
Review recent projects in similar settings, restaurants, nurseries, offices, and, if possible, visit a completed wall. Request references, confirm public liability insurance, and ask for a small paid sample or test patch to assess colour and adhesion. Consistent reviews praising punctuality and clean worksite practices are strong indicators.
What’s different about commercial versus residential mural projects in Barcelona?
Commercial murals often require brand guidelines, method statements, out-of-hours work and coordination with building management. Access equipment, permits and safety compliance can add time and cost. Residential projects are typically faster, but still benefit from clear scheduling, surface prep, and protective finishes to ensure long-term durability.

Dos and Don’ts as an expat
Mastering your selection: essential dos and don’ts for finding the ideal artistic painter
Do’s
Do Prioritize Open Communication
Select an artistic painter who emphasizes open communication throughout the creative process. This ensures your ideas and feedback are valued and incorporated into the artwork, leading to a final piece that aligns with your vision.
Do Look for Attention to Detail
Choose a painter known for their meticulous attention to detail. This quality can significantly enhance the final artwork, ensuring that the colors, themes, and elements are crafted beautifully, thus creating a masterpiece that captivates and resonates.
Do Seek Testimonials on Timeliness
Consider the painter's reputation for meeting deadlines. A commitment to timely delivery not only reflects professionalism but also minimizes stress during the project, allowing for a smooth and satisfying collaboration.
Do Check for Creative Flexibility
Find an artist who showcases creative flexibility and can adapt to your changing ideas. Their willingness to explore new concepts and incorporate your feedback can lead to innovative and personalized artwork that truly represents your vision.
Dont’s
Don't Neglect Communication Before Hiring
Failing to ensure clear communication and responsiveness during initial inquiries may signal potential issues during the project. A service provider who is slow to respond before being hired may not prioritize your project once engaged.
Don't Ignore Portfolio and Style Compatibility
Choosing an artist without reviewing their past work may result in a mismatch between your vision and their style. It's essential to ensure that their artistic approach aligns with your desired outcome to avoid dissatisfaction.
Don't Overlook Experience with Specific Projects
Hiring a painter or illustrator without confirming their relevant experience for your specific needs, such as murals or custom illustrations, could lead to unmet expectations. Prioritize artists with proven success in the exact type of work you require.
Don't Wait Until the Last Minute to Discuss Deadlines
Delaying discussions about project timelines can lead to frustration if deadlines are not met. Ensure that the service provider understands your schedule and can confirm their capability to deliver within your required timeframe.
