I have known her for many years now and she has always been nice and attentive. She works great with kids and they love her. She is young but very professional and takes her job seriously.

Anne

Barcelona on Nov 2025

I got in touch with Julie for a very last-minute babysitting on a Saturday for 2 hours for my three kids, including a little baby. She was available and very honest - she told me upfront she didn’t know how to change a diaper, which I appreciated, and it still went smoothly. The children were very delighted with her and everything was positive. Price felt normal from what I remember, and overall it was super good.

I had a super positive experience with our babysitter. She did several babysitting with my daughters and everything was always super good - the girls were super happy and I recommend her a lot. We’ve been with her for several years, like 2 or 3, we lived very close and I knew her parents, so it started early. I felt totally comfortable with her at home, she gets along very well with the children and also keeps everything in order, even cleaning up after dinner without me asking, just doing her job correctly in a global way.

Frequently Asked Questions

What expats want to know before hiring babysitters in Barcelona.

Are there English-speaking babysitters in Barcelona?
Yes, and more do as the expat community grows. The hard part is knowing who is reliable before you book, so every one we list is reviewed by other expats who have actually used them.
What should I check before hiring babysitters in Barcelona?
Read recent reviews, be clear about exactly what you need, and agree the scope and an estimate in writing before any work starts. For anything regulated, check they hold the right credentials for the job.
What is the most important thing to know before booking?
Be clear about what you want and get the price and scope agreed up front, so there are no surprises. Reading other expats' reviews is the quickest way to find someone who does the job well and communicates clearly.
What should I avoid when hiring babysitters in Barcelona?
Avoid paying the full amount up front (a deposit can be fair), anyone who will not give a clear quote, and unusually cheap prices that get padded with extras later.
How do I explain what I need if my Spanish is limited?
A photo, a short video or a written list does most of the talking, and the professionals we list are used to international clients. Booking an English-speaking one takes the stress out of it entirely.
How do you say babysitters in Spanish?
In Spanish, babysitters are usually called canguros (nineras). That is the word to search for or to ask a neighbour, though many professionals here are used to the English term too.
How do I find babysitters I can trust in Barcelona?
Check the reviews and any credentials before you book. On Locallista the reviews are phone-verified and the ranking is based on real expat experience, not who paid the most.

Selecting the perfect babysitter is crucial for both your peace of mind and your children's happiness. As you navigate this important decision, keeping these dos and don’ts in mind will help you find a caregiver who not only meets your family’s needs but also fosters a nurturing and engaging environment for your little ones. Remember, the right babysitter should not only be reliable and experienced but also connect with your children in a meaningful way, ensuring a positive experience for everyone involved. By prioritizing trust and communication, you're setting the foundation for a successful caregiving relationship that can grow alongside your family's unique journey.

Dos and Don’ts as an expat

Essential dos and don’ts for finding the perfect babysitter for your family

Do’s
Do Prioritize Experience with Children
When selecting a babysitter, look for individuals who have substantial experience working with children of various ages. Their familiarity with childcare dynamics and routines can ensure a more engaging and trustworthy environment for your kids.
Do Consider Language Skills
If your family speaks more than one language, opt for babysitters who are fluent in those languages. This can enhance communication with your children, making them feel more comfortable and understood during care sessions.
Do Look for Positive Communication and Reliability
Choose a babysitter who communicates effectively and is always punctual. Reliability is essential, as it helps build trust and confidence, allowing you to focus on your responsibilities without worrying about your children.
Do Seek Recommendations from Trusted Sources
Before hiring a babysitter, ask friends, family, or community members for recommendations. Personal testimonials can provide insight into the babysitter's character and abilities, making it easier to find someone who matches your family's needs.
Dont’s
Don't Hire Without Checking for Creativity in Engagement
Choosing a babysitter who lacks creativity in engagement activities might lead to a dull experience for your child. Look for caregivers who can offer fun, interactive activities that keep your child interested and actively involved.
Don't Ignore Communication Skills
It's essential to select a babysitter with strong communication skills. A caregiver who does not keep parents informed about their child's activities or any delays may create unnecessary anxiety, especially when you're away from your child.
Don't Underestimate the Importance of Reliability
Hiring a babysitter without a proven track record of reliability can lead to issues such as late arrivals or no-shows. Ensure that you choose someone who is known for their punctuality and commitment to scheduled times.
Don't Choose a Caregiver Lacking Special Skills
If your child has specific needs, selecting a babysitter without relevant skills, like language proficiency or experience with certain age groups, might result in miscommunication and ineffective childcare. Look for someone who aligns with your child's unique requirements.
