We are Dutch and our standards are high. And Charles? He surpasses them. What a fantastic professional he is. He responds quickly, communicates clearly, works precisely and very neatly, uses quality paint, covers the floor completely, and protects cabinets and other walls. He works quickly, in a structured, exact, and clean manner. He also proactively asks whether he should take his shoes off. He has a clear design vision, offers good insights on where paintings should best be placed, and simply takes care of everything, reliable and trouble-free. The next job will be a custom-made desk! We have found our new professional.

Adrian painted one room in my home office and the experience was fantastic. He was very helpful, explained everything, recommended a place to get paint samples, and brought the paints and materials. We chose the colors and he finished the job in two days as he promised. Though I’m new here and don’t have much point of reference, I think the price was fair.

Nathan installed a second wall to reinforce an old wall in our studio. He came first to see what had to be done and talk to me, ordered everything, then did the install in one day. It was very quick, great communication, professional invoice, very easy, and he cleaned everything up - he even had his own vacuum. He arrived about two hours later than planned because of a rental car but he told me, and while the price is higher than others it matches the quality, so I’m continuing with him for more things.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to hire a painter in Barcelona?
Prices in Barcelona vary by size, prep work and paint quality. As a rough guide, a single room might be €150, €300, a 2-bedroom flat €800, €2,000, and full apartments €1,200, €3,500. Each painter sets their own rates; you’ll agree the price and pay them directly.
How long does it take to paint a 2-bedroom flat in Barcelona?
Most 2-bedroom flats in Barcelona take 2, 4 days to paint, including preparation, minor repairs and two coats. Timings stretch if there’s wallpaper removal, extensive plastering, complex colours, or humid conditions that slow drying. Ask for a schedule in the written quote to plan access and ventilation.
Do painters in Barcelona supply the paint, or should I buy it?
Many Barcelona painters supply trusted brands and include materials in the quote, which can be cost-effective. If you prefer specific eco-friendly or mould-resistant paints, agree the brand, finish and colour codes in writing. Clarify whether leftover paint will be labelled and left with you for future touch-ups.
What should a professional painting quote include?
A solid painting quote should detail surface preparation, small plaster or plasterboard repairs, number of coats, paint brand and finish, protection of floors and furniture, and post-job clean-up. It should also state timelines, access needs, waste disposal, and any extras such as scaffolding, stairwells or exterior areas.
How can I find a reliable English-speaking painter in Barcelona?
Look for Barcelona painters with strong recent reviews, clear before-and-after photos, and prompt communication in English. Arrange a site visit to test attention to detail and request a written, itemised quote. Ask about insurance, paint brands used, and how they protect your home during the job.
Is mould and humidity a problem in Barcelona homes, and which paints help?
Barcelona’s coastal climate can bring humidity and mould, especially in bathrooms and north-facing rooms. Choose anti-mould, moisture-resistant paints and ensure proper surface priming, ventilation and drying time between coats. Painters can also treat damp patches and recommend maintenance tips to keep walls fresh through the humid season.
Do I need permission to paint exteriors or community areas in Barcelona?
Interior painting inside your flat rarely needs permission, but exterior façades or community areas often require approval from the building community and sometimes the city council. Discuss scaffolding, lift protection and permitted working hours with your painter to avoid fines and minimise disruption to neighbours.
Are eco-friendly or low-VOC paints available in Barcelona?
Yes, eco-friendly, low-VOC and odourless paints are widely available in Barcelona and are ideal for families, pets and home offices. They reduce fumes, speed up re-occupation, and still deliver durable finishes. Confirm the exact brand and series in the quote, as performance varies between manufacturers and rooms.
How far in advance should I book a painter in Barcelona?
Good painters in Barcelona can book up quickly, especially in spring and early summer. Allow 2, 4 weeks’ lead time for standard jobs and longer for exteriors or large refurbishments. If you need urgent work, be flexible with dates or expect a premium for short-notice scheduling.
Do painters in Barcelona offer guarantees or warranties?
Many professional painters offer workmanship guarantees, typically covering peeling or flaking for 6, 24 months. Ask for the guarantee terms in writing, including what’s excluded, such as structural damp or impact damage. Keep left-over paint for easy touch-ups and note any recommended maintenance to preserve the finish.

Selecting the right painter is crucial for transforming your space while ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience. Prioritizing professionals with strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a reputation for reliability will not only enhance the quality of your project but also provide you with peace of mind. Remember to seek recommendations and look beyond price alone to find a painter who delivers value without compromising standards. By adhering to these dos and don’ts, you'll navigate the process with confidence, ensuring your painting project exceeds expectations and leaves a lasting impression.

Dos and Don’ts as an expat

Smart choices: dos and don’ts when hiring a painter for your home

Do’s
Do Prioritize Professionals with Strong Communication Skills
Ensure the painter you hire has excellent communication skills. Positive reviews highlight that clear communication and attentiveness to client needs significantly enhance project satisfaction and allow for smoother interactions throughout the service.
Do Look for Attention to Detail in Work
Choose a painter who demonstrates meticulous attention to detail in their work. Satisfied customers frequently mention high-quality finishes, thorough preparations, and excellent cleanup, which lead to a premium finish and a better overall experience.
Do Verify Punctuality and Reliability
Select a painter known for being punctual and reliable. Reviews emphasize that consistent arrival times and follow-through on commitments result in more efficient projects and increased customer satisfaction, ensuring your time and investment are respected.
Do Consider Customer Recommendations and Repeat Use
Look for painters who have earned repeat business or strong recommendations from previous clients. This is often a sign of consistent quality and service, indicating that many customers have had positive experiences worth sharing.
Dont’s
Don't Hire Without Checking Communication Skills
Effective communication is vital in any project. Avoid hiring service providers who struggle with language proficiency or fail to clearly articulate their plans and timelines, as this could result in misunderstandings and unmet expectations.
Don't Overlook the Importance of Cleanliness
Providers who leave a mess after completing their work can lead to extra hassle for customers. Ensure to seek reviews that highlight the provider's approach to cleanliness and their practices in maintaining a tidy workspace throughout the project.
Don't Ignore Punctuality and Timeliness
Service providers who are frequently late or unresponsive can significantly delay your project. Be cautious of vendors who do not prioritize scheduling and punctuality, as this may result in frustrating and costly delays.
Don't Choose Based on Price Alone
Selecting a service provider solely on the lowest price can compromise quality. Always look for reviews that mention the balance between cost and service quality to ensure you receive good value for your investment without sacrificing standards.
