I’ve used Jay before when he worked somewhere else, and for the last year I’ve been going to his new shop. He is always very, very professional and polite, has a lot of time for me, gives good suggestions, and I leave the salon perfectly happy. He speaks English and Spanish, advises me on what good shampoo and things to buy, and it’s easy to schedule with him and he always comes on time. Price feels fair.

I’ve been going to Jay for years for highlights and all my color, and I still travel back just to see him because he’s the only one I trust. He’s a perfectionist and won’t let you leave until it’s perfect, and he even squeezed me in after hours one Saturday and later redid my party extensions for free at his place to make sure they were spot on. He speaks English and somehow knows when I want to chat and when I just want quiet, which I love. It isn’t cheap, but the service is above all else and totally worth it.

I usually go to Jay to do my hair and to cut the fine part of the hair, and recently I had my hair dyed. The result was very nice. Jay is very professional and very familiar, makes you feel comfortable - it’s almost like a therapy because you relax and speak about life, and he gives me good advice. For me it’s more about the very good quality he provides than the price, so I’m good with it.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I find an English-speaking hairdresser in Barcelona?
Many Barcelona salons are expat-friendly and have English-speaking stylists. Search for terms like “English-speaking hairdresser Barcelona”, review recent photos and ratings, and message salons on WhatsApp to confirm language. Trusted expat directories and community groups also help you shortlist vetted professionals before you book.
What are typical hair salon prices in Barcelona?
Typical Barcelona prices: men’s cut €18, 35, women’s cut and blow-dry €30, 60, blow-dry €20, 35, root colour €40, 70, highlights/balayage €80, 180, keratin €120, 250. Exact pricing varies by salon, length, and products. Prices are set by each provider, and you pay them directly, so request a detailed quote beforehand.
Do I need a patch test before hair colouring in Barcelona?
In Spain, reputable salons usually require a 24, 48 hour patch test for new colour clients, especially for oxidative dyes and bleach. It reduces allergy risk and helps assess hair condition. Plan an initial consultation or quick test visit before your appointment, and share your colour history and sensitivities.
Are Barcelona hair salons open late or on Sundays?
Most Barcelona hair salons open Monday to Saturday, often 10:00, 20:00, with later weekday appointments in busy areas. Sunday openings are uncommon, though some tourist-zone or bridal specialists may accommodate by request. Book ahead for evenings and weekends, and confirm any out-of-hours fees or deposit policies when scheduling.
What should I bring to a hair consultation if my Spanish is limited?
Bring clear inspiration photos, a brief hair history (colour, bleach, keratin, medications), and be honest about maintenance time and budget. If Spanish is tricky, prepare key phrases or ask for an English-speaking stylist via WhatsApp. Discuss lifestyle, aftercare, and future appointments to ensure your cut and colour stay consistent.
How do I vet a hairdresser’s quality and reliability in Barcelona?
Check recent, verified reviews and look for consistent praise on communication, colour accuracy, and aftercare. Browse Instagram portfolios for your hair type and ask which brands and techniques they use. Shortlist through curated expat directories and book a simple trim first to test rapport, timing, and hygiene standards.
Can I find curly hair specialists, colour correction or bridal stylists in Barcelona?
Barcelona offers specialists for curly hair, colour correction, extensions, bridal styling, and children’s cuts. Search for terms like “rizos/curly specialist”, “colour correction Barcelona”, or “novias/bridal hair” and review before, after photos. Confirm experience with your texture, consultation length, patch testing, and aftercare plans before committing to multi-hour services.
What payment methods and tipping etiquette should I expect at Barcelona salons?
Salons typically accept cards and cash; some request a deposit for lengthy colour, keratin, or bridal bookings. You pay the salon directly at the appointment. Tipping isn’t obligatory in Spain, but rounding up or adding 5, 10% for exceptional service is appreciated, especially for complex transformations.
Should I book in advance or try walk-ins for haircuts and colour in Barcelona?
Popular stylists fill up fast; book 3, 10 days ahead for haircuts and 1, 3 weeks for colour or extensions. Walk-ins may work midweek, but appointments secure timing, language needs, and the right specialist. Confirm duration, price estimate, and any pre-wash or patch-test requirements when you schedule.
What hygiene standards should a Barcelona hairdresser follow?
Expect sanitised tools, disinfected stations, clean brushes and bowls, fresh towels or disposable capes, and single-use blades. Colour and bleach should be mixed hygienically with gloves and patch tests offered when appropriate. If cleanliness looks questionable, leave politely and choose a salon with higher hygiene ratings and transparent practices.

Dos and Don’ts as an expat
Smart choices: dos and don’ts for finding the perfect hairdresser
Do’s
Do Look for Clean and Welcoming Salons
Choose hairdressers that maintain a tidy and inviting environment. A clean salon not only enhances comfort but also reflects the professionalism of the stylist. Many reviewers highlight how cleanliness contributes positively to their experience.
Do Select Stylists with Strong Communication Skills
Opt for hairdressers who prioritize clear communication and consultation before starting any service. Reviews indicate that professionals who listen carefully to client needs and provide tailored advice result in better, more satisfying outcomes.
Do Consider Scheduling Flexibility
Look for hairdressers who are accommodating with scheduling and respond promptly to booking inquiries. Many clients appreciate stylists that can easily fit appointments into their busy lives, enhancing overall satisfaction.
Do Seek Stylists who Provide Long-term Hair Care Tips
Choose hairdressers who share knowledgeable advice about maintaining your style and hair health beyond the salon. Reviewers value professionals who take the time to educate clients on aftercare, ensuring lasting results and healthy hair.
Dont’s
Don't Assume Every Hairdresser Will Optimize Your Time
Some hairdressers tend to take longer than expected for appointments, which can lead to frustration if you're on a tight schedule. Always ask about the estimated duration during booking to avoid unexpected delays.
Don't Neglect to Communicate Your Preferences Clearly
Failing to express your specific style or maintenance preferences can result in a haircut or color that doesn’t align with your expectations. Ensure you communicate your needs during the consultation before the service begins.
Don't Overlook the Importance of Cleanliness
Choosing a hairdresser or salon that neglects hygiene can lead to unsatisfactory experiences. Always check reviews for mentions of cleanliness, as a well-maintained salon reflects a professional approach to client care.
Don't Ignore the Value of Recommendations and Tips
Not every hairdresser will offer advice on hair care or styling post-appointment. Missing out on such recommendations can limit your ability to maintain your new look. Choose a stylist who provides tailored tips for ongoing hair health.
