Pauline helped me decorate my new home when I moved to a new city, doing everything from ordering the furniture, to organizing the delivery, and helping me choose. I needed someone because I was always in the same place, and doing it remotely was difficult. When I arrived at the house everything was in place: she had a team and she unboxed everything so it was already in the right spot, and she checked afterwards if everything was alright. The price felt fair and I’m very happy with what we bought and the way it was managed.

Conforma Design designed two bedrooms for my children, one for a girl and one for a boy. From the very first visit, they took the time to understand our family, listen to the kids’ needs, and carefully measure the spaces. They then presented us with two design concepts, and we chose the one we liked best. The project included a new room configuration, custom wardrobes, and decoration ideas, and Conforma Design followed the process all the way through execution. Everything was completed on time, the pricing felt fair, and we had no problems throughout the process. We’re very happy with the final result.

I inherited a collection of original Inca ceramics and he intervened my main room, threw away some walls and created an amazing glass exhibition so the pieces look like they are floating, with very specific lights that make the room very, very elegant. He also intervened our terraces with indirect lights, plants, warmers and these protectors you open and close so the wind stays out and the terrace becomes like a room, now we gained a lot of social space and everybody is complimenting us. Because of that, he designed our new offices to attract more youth and make people more relaxed and productive, and he really got the idea with the furniture, the layouts, the lighting and the floors, and people are very happy with the new space. For the industrial plant he worked with our engineers and specialists, understood all the processes, machinery and the logistics center, delivered on time with a very service oriented team, and the price felt very reasonable.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose an English-speaking interior designer in Madrid?
Review portfolios for homes similar to yours, especially Madrid apartments with heritage features or compact layouts. Confirm the designer communicates fluently in English, offers clear timelines and budgets, and knows local suppliers and trades. Ask for recent references and a detailed proposal outlining scope, deliverables, and revision limits.
What are typical interior design costs in Madrid?
Initial consultations typically cost €80, €200 per hour. Concept design for a room can range from €800, €3,000, while full‑home design is often 8, 15% of the construction budget or a fixed fee. Prices are set by each designer and paid directly to them, and rates are not listed on Locallista; request itemised written quotes.
Do I need permits for home renovations or layout changes in Madrid?
Cosmetic updates rarely need permits, but moving walls, altering plumbing, or changing windows typically requires a licence from the Ajuntament de Madrid. Designers often collaborate with an architect or technical architect to manage 'obra menor' or 'obra mayor' applications. Confirm who handles paperwork, timings, and community approvals.
How long does an interior design project take in Madrid?
Concept and planning usually take 2, 6 weeks; procurement 2, 8 weeks; renovations for a typical Madrid flat 6, 16 weeks depending on scope and permits. Lead times for custom joinery or sofas can add 4, 12 weeks. Agree milestones, decision deadlines, and site‑visit schedules to keep the programme on track.
What is usually included in interior design services?
Interior design services often include briefing, space planning, moodboards or 3D visuals, materials and colour schemes, furniture selection, and lighting plans. Many designers prepare specifications, budgets, and coordinate contractors, plus site supervision and snagging. Clarify deliverables, number of revisions, and whether procurement and installation are included in the fee.
How can I vet the quality of a Madrid interior designer?
To vet quality, review independent testimonials, ask for client references, and examine before‑and‑after case studies. Look for documented processes, transparent communication in English, and detailed proposals with timelines and cost breakdowns. A clear contract outlining scope, payment schedule, and warranties indicates a professional, reliable interior designer in Madrid.
Can a Madrid interior designer work remotely before I move?
Yes. Many Madrid interior designers offer video consultations, digital moodboards, and remote planning using floor plans or scans. They can develop layouts before you arrive and schedule on‑site visits once you’re in the city. Agree how samples, approvals, reporting, and time zones will be managed to keep decisions moving.
Will an interior designer manage contractors and quotes?
Many interior designers in Madrid can shortlist contractors, obtain comparable quotes, and coordinate trades during installation. Some provide full project management; others are design‑only. Confirm responsibilities, site supervision frequency, reporting format, snagging process, and who signs off works, guarantees, and final payments.
Can interior designers source furniture and handle deliveries in Madrid?
Designers typically source furniture and finishes from local Catalan and Spanish brands as well as international suppliers. Some pass on trade discounts or charge a procurement fee, clarify policies in writing. They can coordinate deliveries, lift access, storage, and installation to suit apartment buildings and community rules.
What should renters in Madrid know about interior design changes?
If you’re renting in Madrid, prioritise reversible upgrades and obtain landlord consent for any alterations. Building communities (comunidad de propietarios) may restrict work hours, lift use, deliveries, and waste disposal. A designer can optimise layouts, lighting, and furnishings to elevate the space without breaching lease terms or deposit conditions.
Selecting the perfect interior designer is a key step in transforming your living space into a true reflection of your style and needs. By adhering to these dos and don’ts, you can navigate the selection process with confidence, ensuring that you collaborate with a professional who understands your vision and communicates effectively. Dos and Don’ts as an expat
Smart choices: dos and don’ts for hiring the perfect interior designer
Do’s
Do Seek a Designer Who Values Your Vision
Find an interior designer who takes the time to understand your personal style and preferences, ensuring that their designs truly reflect your vision. Their ability to listen and incorporate your ideas dramatically enhances the end result.
Do Prioritize Communication and Responsiveness
Engage a designer known for their excellent communication skills and responsiveness. This ensures a smooth collaboration throughout the project, helping you stay informed and involved every step of the way.
Do Look for Proven Track Records of Successful Projects
Select a designer with a portfolio showcasing successful transformations, particularly in similar projects. Positive testimonials and repeat clients highlight their capability to execute effective designs that meet various needs.
Do Emphasize Attention to Detail
Choose a designer who demonstrates a keen eye for detail and craftsmanship. This includes considering all aspects of the design process from furniture selection to the final touches, ensuring a polished and cohesive look.
Dont’s
Don't Ignore Communication Issues
Ensure that your interior designer has a clear and effective communication style. Reviews indicate that miscommunication can cause delays and misunderstandings, leading to outcomes that do not meet expectations. A responsive designer can make all the difference in the project’s success.
Don't Rush into Hiring Without Reviewing Portfolios
Before hiring an interior designer, take the time to review their portfolio thoroughly. Familiarize yourself with their past projects to ensure their style aligns with your vision. Skipping this step can lead to dissatisfaction with the final results, as the designer may not accurately capture your aesthetics.
Don't Neglect to Clarify Timelines and Deliverables
Clarify project timelines and expectations upfront. Several reviews highlight challenges with delays and unmet deadlines that could have been avoided with clear initial discussions. A well-defined timeline helps in managing expectations and ensuring the project stays on track.
Don't Overlook Budget Discussions Early On
Have an open and honest budget discussion with potential designers early in the process. Many reviews emphasize that unclear budgeting can lead to overspending or disappointment if the final deliverables exceed financial expectations. A transparent budget conversation helps prevent issues down the line.
