I was looking for an accountant for my new companies in Portugal, and I have been happy with Mark. He helped with the establishing of one of the companies as well, and if I have a bookkeeping question, an accounting question, or even something legal, I have done everything through him. He is very responsive and very quick on WhatsApp, so it does not always have to be formal emails, and I appreciate that a lot. The price feels reasonable, and I have a package that includes the accounting software as well.

I’ve been working with Marta for about six weeks on a property project in Portugal that’s still in the early stages. There’s quite a lot of administration and she handles the local stuff, understanding how institutions work in Portugal like the CTT and electricity companies, and she’s set up a few things we needed. We’ve been extremely impressed with her - she’s actually amazing.

Carolina helped me set up my utilities and get settled, everything from painting to handyman stuff. Her level of detail and consistency is excellent, and she’s intelligent, personable, resourceful, and she gets the job done. I’ve worked with several assistants and she’s actually the best executive assistant I’ve ever worked with. Scheduling was easy and the price felt reasonable for the quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

What expats want to know before hiring bureaucratic services in Lisbon.

Are there English-speaking bureaucratic services in Lisbon?
Yes, and more do as the expat community grows. The hard part is knowing who is reliable before you book, so every one we list is reviewed by other expats who have actually used them.
What should I check before hiring bureaucratic services in Lisbon?
Read recent reviews, be clear about exactly what you need, and agree the scope and an estimate in writing before any work starts. For anything regulated, check they hold the right credentials for the job.
What is the most important thing to know before booking?
Be clear about what you want and get the price and scope agreed up front, so there are no surprises. Reading other expats' reviews is the quickest way to find someone who does the job well and communicates clearly.
What should I avoid when hiring bureaucratic services in Lisbon?
Avoid paying the full amount up front (a deposit can be fair), anyone who will not give a clear quote, and unusually cheap prices that get padded with extras later.
How do I explain what I need if my Portuguese is limited?
A photo, a short video or a written list does most of the talking, and the professionals we list are used to international clients. Booking an English-speaking one takes the stress out of it entirely.
How do you say bureaucratic services in Portuguese?
In Portuguese, bureaucratic services are usually called servicos burocraticos. That is the word to search for or to ask a neighbour, though many professionals here are used to the English term too.

Dos and Don’ts as an expat

Essential dos and don'ts for navigating bureaucratic services like a pro

Do’s
Do Seek Responsiveness and Communication
Look for service providers known for their quick responses and clear communication. Efficient communication can significantly ease the process of bureaucratic dealings and prevent misunderstandings, ensuring a smoother experience.
Do Verify Their Practical Knowledge of Local Systems
Ensure the provider has a solid understanding of local bureaucratic processes and systems. Knowledge about navigating local laws, healthcare systems, and taxation can provide invaluable assistance and save you from potential pitfalls.
Do Check for Flexibility in Scheduling
Choose a provider who can offer flexible scheduling options. This attribute is crucial, as it can accommodate your busy schedule, allowing you to receive timely assistance without unnecessary delays.
Do Consider Their Pricing Structure
Evaluate the pricing structure of potential service providers. Fair and transparent pricing can make a significant difference, especially for ongoing services, and ensures that you're receiving value for your investment.
Dont’s
Don't Settle for Slow Response Times
Choosing a service provider with slow response times can lead to unnecessary delays and frustration. Ensure that the provider prioritizes timely communication to address your questions and needs promptly.
Don't Ignore Professional Credentials
It's crucial to verify the professional credentials of your service provider. Lack of qualifications or expertise can lead to misinformation and mistakes in handling your bureaucratic needs.
Don't Overlook Client Reviews and Testimonials
Failing to consider past client reviews can result in selecting a service provider with a poor track record. Look for consistent positive feedback regarding reliability and effectiveness from previous clients.
Don't Rely Solely on Initial Impressions
Initial meetings may not provide a complete picture of a service provider's capabilities. Take the time to assess their follow-up responsiveness and thoroughness beyond the first encounter.
