Gonçalo

Lisbon on May 2026

I hired Aleksei to basically paint my entire house after I bought it, fix some cracks and paint it. It went really good; he was fast, proactive and available, and he even came back to fix some other things that started to show later, like building issues, not his work. He wasn’t on time the first day, but he compensated me for being late and after that he was always on time. The finish looked good with attention to detail, and the price was what I expected.

Laura

Sintra on Oct 2025

I hired Tomas to fix a leaking rooftop terrace. We couldn’t find the source, so we’re re-flooring and waterproofing the whole upstairs deck, enclosing part of it, and adding a retractable pergola. The project is still underway, but communication has been great, an engineer comes by to oversee, and the crew is here every day, responsive and really nice, so I feel like we’re in good hands, though I don’t want to jinx it. It’s a big job and a bit expensive, but so far so good.

Renato

Lisbon on Jun 2026

I hired Matt to handle several tasks in my restaurant - painting plus general installations and repairs - and it was great. He came for multiple visits, was punctual and very courteous, and communication was easy even though I'm not a native English speaker. The price felt a little high, but considering the quality and how smoothly everything was done, it felt adequate. I'm very comfortable to recommend him.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does house painting cost in Lisbon?
Indicative interior repainting in Lisbon often ranges from €8, €15 per m² including materials, with a typical 2-bedroom flat totalling roughly €900, €2,000. Exterior work can be €10, €25+ per m² depending on access, scaffolding and preparation. Prices are set by individual painters, and you pay them directly; accurate quotes require a site visit.
Do painters in Lisbon speak English and how do I communicate?
Many Lisbon painters serving expats are fluent in English and commonly use WhatsApp, email and phone for quick quotes and updates. Ask for a written scope in English, including timelines and materials, to avoid misunderstandings. Sharing photos, measurements and preferred colours speeds up accurate estimates.
What should a professional painting quote include?
A solid quote should detail surface preparation, number of coats, paint brand/grade, areas in m², protection of furniture/floors, and clean‑up. It should also include a timeline, any access costs (e.g., scaffolding), a workmanship warranty, and itemised IVA (23%). Clarify waste disposal and whether materials are included.
How long does interior painting take in Lisbon apartments?
As a guide, one room may take 1, 3 days including preparation and drying; a standard 2-bedroom flat often takes 3, 7 days. Older buildings with plaster repairs, mould treatment or humidity can extend timelines. Good ventilation and dehumidifiers help speed drying, especially in winter.
Do I need permission to paint my flat or building façade?
Interior repainting of your private unit usually needs no permission, but exterior façades and common areas require approval from the condominium (condomínio). In heritage zones, the city council may also need to approve colours or scaffolding. Your painter can advise on permits and safe access solutions.
Which paint types work best for Lisbon’s climate?
Lisbon’s coastal humidity favours mould‑resistant, breathable paints for older plaster, and washable acrylics for busy interiors. For exteriors, look for salt‑air and UV‑resistant masonry systems with proper primers. Ask your painter to specify products suited to damp areas and to do a sample patch before full application.
Can I supply my own paint, or do painters provide materials?
Both options are common. Many painters secure trade prices and can recommend the right systems, but you can supply your preferred brand if quantities, sheen and compatibility are confirmed in writing. Agree who handles delivery, storage, and any returns to avoid delays.
How can I vet a painter and ensure quality?
Request recent local references, photos of comparable projects, and evidence of public liability cover. Review independent ratings, ask for a small test area, and confirm dust protection, masking, and clean‑up standards in the contract. A clear warranty and itemised scope signal a professional operation.
When is the best time of year to paint in Lisbon?
Spring and autumn offer mild, dry conditions that suit both interior and exterior painting. Exterior work is best scheduled outside rainy spells and heatwaves, while interior jobs can be done year‑round with good ventilation. Book early for peak months to secure preferred dates.
Are eco‑friendly, low‑VOC paints available in Lisbon?
Yes, low‑VOC and odour‑minimising paints are widely available from Portuguese and international brands. They’re ideal for homes with children, pets, or sensitivities, and many include anti‑mould options for kitchens and bathrooms. Ask your painter to specify certifications and ventilate spaces during and after application.

Dos and Don’ts as an expat

Smart choices: dos and don’ts when hiring a painter for your home

Do’s
Do Prioritize Professionals with Strong Communication Skills
Ensure the painter you hire has excellent communication skills. Positive reviews highlight that clear communication and attentiveness to client needs significantly enhance project satisfaction and allow for smoother interactions throughout the service.
Do Look for Attention to Detail in Work
Choose a painter who demonstrates meticulous attention to detail in their work. Satisfied customers frequently mention high-quality finishes, thorough preparations, and excellent cleanup, which lead to a premium finish and a better overall experience.
Do Verify Punctuality and Reliability
Select a painter known for being punctual and reliable. Reviews emphasize that consistent arrival times and follow-through on commitments result in more efficient projects and increased customer satisfaction, ensuring your time and investment are respected.
Do Consider Customer Recommendations and Repeat Use
Look for painters who have earned repeat business or strong recommendations from previous clients. This is often a sign of consistent quality and service, indicating that many customers have had positive experiences worth sharing.
Dont’s
Don't Hire Without Checking Communication Skills
Effective communication is vital in any project. Avoid hiring service providers who struggle with language proficiency or fail to clearly articulate their plans and timelines, as this could result in misunderstandings and unmet expectations.
Don't Overlook the Importance of Cleanliness
Providers who leave a mess after completing their work can lead to extra hassle for customers. Ensure to seek reviews that highlight the provider's approach to cleanliness and their practices in maintaining a tidy workspace throughout the project.
Don't Ignore Punctuality and Timeliness
Service providers who are frequently late or unresponsive can significantly delay your project. Be cautious of vendors who do not prioritize scheduling and punctuality, as this may result in frustrating and costly delays.
Don't Choose Based on Price Alone
Selecting a service provider solely on the lowest price can compromise quality. Always look for reviews that mention the balance between cost and service quality to ensure you receive good value for your investment without sacrificing standards.
