Shelia

Quinta Do Pinheiro, Sep 2026

I hired Tiago for plumbing services, he replaced the shower units and heads in 2 of my bathrooms, 3 in total. He came out right away, assessed what the real issue was, explained my options, and even helped me get the equipment. He was very professional, did it in the time he promised, and the cost felt fair. He also followed up with me to see how things were going, and I really enjoyed the service he provided, his professionalism, knowledge, and skills.

Nazare, Aug 2026

Gael was excellent and did a great job installing our tiles last month. The price was a little higher than the original quote, but I was fine with it and I think his work was worth it. As for punctuality, he was very punctual and even moved the schedule up for us, which was great. I would definitely hire him again.

ALEXANDRA

Lisbon, Aug 2026

I’ve known Carlos for a few years, and the first job he did for me was on a fire system where a few hoses were involved, the faucet was broken, and it needed to be replaced. It was a bit of a complicated job because it involved cutting the fire column and it was next to the meter boxes, and he did a good job, I was satisfied and the job was well done. Since then I’ve called him for other jobs, mostly in sewage and also construction, because sewage always involves reconstruction of places and columns and everything else. The last job he did for me was a break in the water supply in the area of the meter boxes, and it went well.

How much do plumbers cost in Lisbon?

Real price ranges from the jobs our vetted plumbers actually do. Updated July 2026

Bathtub installation

How much does installing a bath cost in Lisbon?

Fitting a new bath is mostly labour when the plumbing is already in place, and a much bigger job when it is not. Swapping a bath for a shower is the common request in older Lisbon flats, and that price usually covers removing the old one and tidying the tiling. Check whether the bath itself is included, as it is often quoted separately.

Fitting a new bath, labour only
from €50
Typical fitting job in Lisbon
€60 to €125
Swapping a bath for a shower
€450 to €600

Bidet installation

How much does installing a bidet cost in Lisbon?

A bidet is a straightforward fitting job when the water and waste connections are already there, which they usually are in older Lisbon bathrooms. It costs more if those connections have to be added. The bidet itself is normally quoted separately from the labour, so ask for both figures.

Fitting labour
€75 on average
With new pipework added
from €250
Hourly rate in Lisbon
€35 to €50 an hour

Faucet repair and replacement

How much does replacing a tap cost in Lisbon?

Swapping a tap is one of the cheapest plumbing jobs if you have already bought the tap. Labour on its own is low, and most of the variation in the price is the tap itself. A dripping tap is often just a washer or a cartridge, so ask whether a repair is possible before agreeing to a full replacement.

Labour to swap a tap
from €35
Replacement including the tap
€70 to €250
Hourly rate in Lisbon
€35 to €50 an hour

Garbage disposal installation

How much does fitting a waste disposal unit cost in Lisbon?

Waste disposal units are uncommon in Portuguese kitchens, so this is a niche job and quotes vary a lot. You will need a plumber willing to fit one and a socket under the sink. It is worth checking that your building's waste pipes are suitable before you buy the unit.

Fitting where the sink is ready
quoted on site
With new pipework added
from €250
Hourly rate in Lisbon
€35 to €50 an hour

Toilet repair and replacement

How much does fixing or replacing a toilet cost in Lisbon?

A running or leaking cistern is one of the most common call-outs, and it is usually a cheap fix done in one visit. Fitting a new toilet costs more because it includes taking the old one out. Ask whether the seal and fittings are included, since they are small costs that tend to appear at the end.

Cistern repair
€45 to €100
Repair including call-out
from €45
Fitting a new toilet
€75 on average

Water dispenser installation

How much does installing a water dispenser cost in Lisbon?

A plumbed-in dispenser needs a water point nearby, so the price depends mostly on whether one already exists. If it does, it is a short job. If it does not, you are paying for new pipework on top. Ask for those two parts of the price separately so you can see what is driving the cost.

Where a water point already exists
short job, quoted on site
With new pipework added
from €250
Hourly rate in Lisbon
€35 to €50 an hour

Water filter installation

How much does installing a water filter cost in Lisbon?

Lisbon tap water is safe to drink, so a filter is usually about taste and limescale rather than safety. Under-sink units are the common choice, and the figures below are the fitting, with the unit itself on top. Ask whether the first set of cartridge changes is included before you agree.

Typical installation
€165 on average
Range for most installations
€80 to €250
Hourly rate in Lisbon
€35 to €50 an hour

Shower enclosure installation

How much does a shower enclosure cost to install in Lisbon?

Replacing a bath with a shower is one of the most common bathroom jobs in Lisbon flats. The quoted price usually covers taking the bath out, fitting the tray and screen, and making the tiling good again. Fitting a screen into a space that already exists is much cheaper. Ask whether waterproofing underneath is part of the price.

Bath replaced with a shower
€450 to €600
Prefabricated screen and tray
from €450
Fitting labour only
€60 to €125

Drain unblocking

How much does unblocking a drain cost in Lisbon?

Most blockages are cleared in a single visit, and the call-out is usually included in the price rather than added on top. A blocked sink or toilet sits at the cheaper end. If the blockage is further down the pipework, or the plumber needs a camera to find it, expect the higher end. Ask whether the price covers the visit before they set off.

Blocked sink or basin
€35 to €80
Blocked toilet
€35 to €125
Blocked pipework, one room
€35 to €350
Call-out plus 45 minutes
from €30

Emergency plumber (24h)

How much does an emergency plumber cost in Lisbon?

Nights, weekends and same-day call-outs cost more than a booked visit, and that is normal rather than someone taking advantage. Ask what the call-out fee is before they set off, and whether the hourly rate changes after hours. If a pipe has burst, turn the water off at the mains first, then call.

Out-of-hours hourly rate
up to €100 an hour
Urgent job needing adaptations
€50 to €180
Standard daytime rate
€35 to €50 an hour

Sewer line replacement

How much does replacing a sewer line cost in Lisbon?

This is major works, and in an apartment building it is usually the condominium's responsibility rather than yours. Prices are quoted after an inspection of the run. Before paying for anything yourself, raise it with the administração do condomínio, which is the building management, and get their position in writing.

Inspection of the run
quoted before work starts
The replacement itself
quoted after inspection
In an apartment block
usually the condominium pays

Water heater installation

How much does installing a water heater cost in Lisbon?

Gas water heaters are the norm in Lisbon flats. Labour on its own is modest when it is a straight swap in the same spot. It costs more when the gas line or the flue has to be adapted, and much more if you buy the heater through the plumber. Ask for the labour and the unit priced separately so you can compare properly.

Straight swap, labour only
€40 to €60
Typical installation in Lisbon
€64 on average
Installation needing adaptations
€45 to €180
Removing the old unit
€7 to €10

Water heater maintenance

How much does servicing a water heater cost in Lisbon?

A yearly service on a gas water heater is cheap next to replacing one, and it is the main thing that prevents cold showers in winter. Small repairs like a faulty ignition or a blocked burner usually happen in the same visit. A quoting visit is sometimes charged and sometimes waived, so it is worth asking first.

Service or small repair
€25 to €120
Quoting visit
€20 to €25
Hourly rate
€29 to €45 an hour

Water underfloor heating installation

How much does water underfloor heating cost in Lisbon?

Underfloor heating is priced per square metre, and it is a renovation-level job because the floor has to come up. The lower figure covers the pipework and manifold alone. It climbs steeply once a heat pump or boiler is part of the job. It is rare in Lisbon flats and more common in houses and full renovations.

Pipework only, per m²
€40 to €95 per m²
Including the heat source, per m²
€120 to €150 per m²
Whole-home system
€4,500 to €7,000

Water underfloor heating repair

How much does repairing underfloor heating cost in Lisbon?

Finding a leak or a blockage under a finished floor is the expensive part, not the repair itself. Plumbers price this after a survey, often using thermal imaging to avoid lifting the whole floor. If the system is still under warranty, check that first, because opening the floor yourself can void it.

Leak survey, often thermal imaging
quoted before work starts
The repair itself
quoted after the survey
Hourly rate in Lisbon
€35 to €50 an hour

New water point installation

How much does adding a new water point cost in Lisbon?

Running a new water point, whether for a washing machine, a sink or an outside tap, depends almost entirely on how far the pipework has to travel. A short run in an open wall is quick. Anything that means chasing walls or crossing rooms costs more, so get the price in writing once the plumber has actually seen it.

New pipework, per room
€200 to €500
New pipe run in a bathroom
from €250
Smaller fixed-price jobs
€20 to €280

Plumbing repair

How much does a plumbing repair cost in Lisbon?

Most household repairs in Lisbon are small, and the call-out plus the first hour covers a lot of them. Ask whether the quote includes the visit and the parts, since those are often listed separately at the end. An English-speaking plumber makes it much easier to understand what actually needs doing before you agree to it.

Typical repair, all in
€92 on average
Range for most repairs
€20 to €280
Hourly rate in Lisbon
€35 to €50 an hour
Small repairs
from €40

Pipe replacement

How much does replacing pipework cost in Lisbon?

Re-piping a whole flat is a renovation-level job and one of the bigger plumbing spends in Lisbon, especially in older buildings where the pipes are buried in the walls. Doing one room at a time is far cheaper. Get at least two quotes in writing, and check whether making the walls good afterwards is included.

Re-piping a whole home in Lisbon
€1,800 to €4,000
New pipework, per room
€200 to €500
New pipe run in a bathroom
from €250

Trenchless pipe repair

How much does trenchless pipe repair cost in Lisbon?

Relining a pipe instead of digging it up is specialist work, priced after a camera survey of the run. The cost depends on the length, the diameter and how reachable the pipe is, so nobody can quote it honestly over the phone. It is usually still cheaper than excavating, especially under a finished floor.

Camera survey of the pipe run
quoted before work starts
Relining, by length and access
quoted after the survey
Hourly rate in Lisbon
€35 to €50 an hour

Water pressure adjustment

How much does fixing water pressure cost in Lisbon?

Low pressure can be anything from a blocked tap aerator to a failing pressure valve or a problem with the building's shared supply, so plumbers price this after looking rather than up front. If you rent, check with the building first: pressure problems are often shared across a whole block and not yours to pay for.

Frequently Asked Questions

What expats want to know before hiring plumbers in Lisbon.

How much does a plumber cost in Lisbon?
Typical daytime call-out fees in Lisbon are about €40 to €80, with hourly rates around €30 to €60. Emergency or after-hours visits run higher, often an €80 to €150 call-out plus the work. A simple unclog or tap fix is usually €50 to €120.
Are there English-speaking plumbers in Lisbon?
Yes, several plumbers here work with expats and offer English support, including for emergencies. We list ones reviewed by other internationals so you can explain the problem and understand the quote.
Can I get an emergency or 24-hour plumber in Lisbon?
Yes, plenty of plumbers offer 24/7 cover for leaks, burst pipes and blockages. Expect a higher call-out for nights and weekends, and for a burst pipe, shut off the water at the mains first, then call.
What should I check before hiring a plumber?
Ask for a call-out fee and an estimate up front, and for bigger jobs get it in writing. A photo or video of the problem helps a lot, and reading recent reviews is the quickest way to avoid the no-shows.
What should I avoid when hiring a plumber?
Be wary of anyone who will not give any kind of estimate, or who quotes a low rate then adds a big transport or call-out charge on the doorstep. Agreeing the basis of the price before they start avoids that.
How do you say plumber in Portuguese?
A plumber is a canalizador in Portuguese (you may also see picheleiro). That is the word to search for or to ask a neighbour, though many plumbers here are used to the English term too.
How do I find a plumber I can trust in Lisbon?
Check recent reviews before you book. On Locallista the reviews are phone-verified and the ranking is based on real expat experience, not who paid the most.

Dos and Don’ts as an expat

Essential dos and don’ts for hiring the right plumber to ensure your home runs smoothly

Do’s
Do Prioritize Communication Skills
Choose a plumber who demonstrates strong communication skills, as effective communication ensures that you understand the problems and solutions clearly. Look for professionals who are responsive and explain their processes in a way that makes sense to you, reducing misunderstandings.
Do Look for Reliability and Punctuality
Select a service provider known for reliability and punctuality. Reviews highlight the importance of plumbers arriving on time, equipped with necessary tools, and prepared to handle the job efficiently. Trustworthy professionals not only respect your schedule but also complete work in a timely manner.
Do Seek Fair Pricing and Transparency
Find plumbers who are upfront about their pricing and offer fair rates for their work. Trusted providers often discuss costs before starting any job and ensure you feel confident about the value for the service, reducing the risk of hidden charges and unexpected fees.
Do Consider Their Problem-Solving Approach
Choose a plumber who actively assesses your plumbing issues and proposes effective solutions. Look for feedback about how they handle unexpected challenges while keeping costs reasonable, ensuring you have a reliable expert capable of addressing varying plumbing problems.
Dont’s
Don't Hire Without Assessing Communication Skills
Effective communication is crucial when dealing with plumbing issues. Ensure the plumber can clearly explain the problem, the solution, and any required steps. Poor communication can lead to misunderstandings and unresolved issues, potentially causing more damage and frustration.
Don't Ignore Online Reviews and Recommendations
Before hiring a plumber, always check online reviews and seek recommendations from friends or family. Relying solely on advertisements or introductory prices may result in hiring someone with a history of poor service or unsatisfactory work quality.
Don't Neglect to Discuss Pricing and Estimates Upfront
Be sure to discuss and confirm estimates and pricing before any work begins. Failing to do so can lead to unexpected costs after the job is completed. Transparency regarding pricing ensures you can budget appropriately and avoid unpleasant surprises.
Don't Overlook the Importance of Punctuality
Punctuality should be a non-negotiable quality in a plumber. Delays can disrupt your schedule, and consistently late service may indicate a lack of professionalism. Hire a provider known for respecting appointment times to ensure efficient service.
