I had a very good experience with Pedro. It took me a while to book between me, him and the landlady, but he was the only one from several I contacted who found a solution for my old ventilation tube, and he arrived on time and was very careful. He changed two ventilation machines, installed silicone around the kitchen counter and I’ve never seen anyone apply silicone so carefully, helped install the shower head holder, and did something extra on the spot; communication was clear, he sent the invoice quickly with all the details, and he told me the cost upfront. Overall I’m very happy with his work.

Lisbon on May 2026
Justine did electricity and sewage for my kitchen and bathroom as part of a full remodel where I changed the location of rooms in my apartment. Everything was respected on the timing, they were very professional, on time, answered, and didn’t make false promises; they came, did their part, and waited when the ceramic and flooring people had to finish. The service was impeccable and the quality was very good, which is hard to find here. Prices felt fair.

I had a kitchen sink that was clogged and Amir came to my apartment and unclogged the drain. He was really good, very nice, easy to book, and he speaks perfect English. He left everything clean afterward and I would absolutely call him again for maintenance. The price felt very cheap, so I even paid a bit extra.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a plumber cost in Lisbon?
Typical daytime call-out fees in Lisbon range from €40-€80, with hourly rates around €30-€60. Emergency or after-hours visits can be €80-€150 call-out plus a higher hourly rate, and parts are extra. Prices are set by each provider. Request a written estimate and pay the plumber directly.
How quickly can an emergency plumber reach me in Lisbon?
Central Lisbon coverage is often 30-90 minutes, though traffic, weather and peak times can extend this, especially to outskirts. Response varies by provider and workload. Share your postcode, photos, and confirm you've shut the water off to help triage and secure the next available emergency plumber.
Can I find English-speaking plumbers in Lisbon?
Yes. Many plumbers in Lisbon serve the expat community and speak English, often communicating via WhatsApp or phone for quick diagnostics. You can send photos or videos and confirm any technical terms in English. If needed, ask about support in other languages such as Portuguese, Spanish or French.
What should I do before a plumber arrives for a leak?
For leaks, turn off the mains stop tap; in Lisbon flats it's typically under the kitchen sink, beside the water heater, or in a corridor riser. Isolate nearby electrics, move valuables, and place containers to catch drips. Photograph damage, notify neighbours if water travels, and clear access for repairs.
Do plumbers in Lisbon repair boilers and water heaters?
Most plumbers handle water heaters and boilers, including esquentadores (instant heaters) and caldeiras (boilers), gas or electric. Hard water in Lisbon makes descaling and filter maintenance important. For gas appliances, use a certified gas technician. Ask about experience with your brand and what guarantee they provide on parts and labour.
How can I vet a reliable plumber in Lisbon?
To vet a plumber in Lisbon, review recent ratings, ask for two local references, and request a written, itemised quote. Confirm they’ll issue a VAT invoice (fatura) with your NIF and define a workmanship guarantee. Prioritise clear communication, punctuality, and experience with older buildings and shared apartment block pipework.
Do plumbers in Lisbon provide invoices and warranties?
Reputable plumbers provide a fatura (VAT invoice) and usually offer a workmanship warranty, commonly 3-12 months depending on the repair and parts used. Clarify whether call-backs, diagnostics, and supplied materials are covered, plus any exclusions. Get the terms in writing before work starts, including response times for warranty issues.
What payment methods do Lisbon plumbers accept?
Payment is typically made directly to the plumber by bank transfer, MB Way, debit/credit card, or cash. Terms vary: some take a call-out fee up front or a deposit for parts, with balance on completion. Always request an itemised invoice showing labour, materials, and any out-of-hours surcharge.
Do I need permission for plumbing work in a Lisbon flat?
Minor repairs rarely need approval, but changes to common pipes, gas lines, or drainage often require landlord or condominium consent. Gas work must be carried out by a certified technician under Portuguese regulations. Check building by-laws and your lease, and secure written approval before starting.
What plumbing issues are common in Lisbon homes?
Older Lisbon buildings often suffer low water pressure, limescale build-up, noisy or ageing pipes, and blocked kitchen or bathroom drains. Hard water can reduce heater efficiency and lifespan. Ask about preventative descaling, aerators, trap cleaning, and backflow checks to improve performance and avoid repeat call-outs.

Dos and Don’ts as an expat
Essential dos and don’ts for hiring the right plumber to ensure your home runs smoothly
Do’s
Do Prioritize Communication Skills
Choose a plumber who demonstrates strong communication skills, as effective communication ensures that you understand the problems and solutions clearly. Look for professionals who are responsive and explain their processes in a way that makes sense to you, reducing misunderstandings.
Do Look for Reliability and Punctuality
Select a service provider known for reliability and punctuality. Reviews highlight the importance of plumbers arriving on time, equipped with necessary tools, and prepared to handle the job efficiently. Trustworthy professionals not only respect your schedule but also complete work in a timely manner.
Do Seek Fair Pricing and Transparency
Find plumbers who are upfront about their pricing and offer fair rates for their work. Trusted providers often discuss costs before starting any job and ensure you feel confident about the value for the service, reducing the risk of hidden charges and unexpected fees.
Do Consider Their Problem-Solving Approach
Choose a plumber who actively assesses your plumbing issues and proposes effective solutions. Look for feedback about how they handle unexpected challenges while keeping costs reasonable, ensuring you have a reliable expert capable of addressing varying plumbing problems.
Dont’s
Don't Hire Without Assessing Communication Skills
Effective communication is crucial when dealing with plumbing issues. Ensure the plumber can clearly explain the problem, the solution, and any required steps. Poor communication can lead to misunderstandings and unresolved issues, potentially causing more damage and frustration.
Don't Ignore Online Reviews and Recommendations
Before hiring a plumber, always check online reviews and seek recommendations from friends or family. Relying solely on advertisements or introductory prices may result in hiring someone with a history of poor service or unsatisfactory work quality.
Don't Neglect to Discuss Pricing and Estimates Upfront
Be sure to discuss and confirm estimates and pricing before any work begins. Failing to do so can lead to unexpected costs after the job is completed. Transparency regarding pricing ensures you can budget appropriately and avoid unpleasant surprises.
Don't Overlook the Importance of Punctuality
Punctuality should be a non-negotiable quality in a plumber. Delays can disrupt your schedule, and consistently late service may indicate a lack of professionalism. Hire a provider known for respecting appointment times to ensure efficient service.
