I hired Bruno to redecorate my kitchen and it was amazing. There was a miscommunication with the plumber and he stepped in, talked to the plumber for me, and fixed it; the whole thing took about two weeks while I was living there and everything was pretty clean. The final result matched what I had in mind and I was really happy about it, especially my girlfriend, and there have been no problems after; if he said something, he came and stood by it. The price felt fair - we agreed on it and he stuck to it, with a small bump only for a little extra work, and I’ve already recommended him many times.

We are extremely satisfied. For the children’s room, they built bunk beds, an office shelf, and wardrobe doors - all done very neatly and precisely, with excellent preparation and follow-up. Afterwards, we entrusted them with additional projects: new doors for existing walk-in closet, and a custom system they designed and executed perfectly. They also implemented our architect’s design for a shelving system in the home office and even installed bookshelves. In total, we completed five projects with this carpentry team - every single one outstanding. They are incredibly pleasant and friendly, and truly the best craftsmen we’ve ever worked with.

I found Richard on Google and needed furniture for my tiny house, mainly several storage cabinets. He took measurements, brought the material, had the parts produced in Germany, and installed everything on site; communication was very, very quick via WhatsApp and short calls and there were no surprises with timing. I had the cabinets within six weeks, the quality is great and they’re still hanging, plus he speaks German, English, and a bit of Portuguese. Price felt fair for the quality and his punctuality was basically German punctuality, so overall it fit me very well.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there English-speaking kitchen carpenters in Lisbon?
In Lisbon, many kitchen carpenters work regularly with expats and speak fluent English. When enquiring, confirm preferred language, WhatsApp availability, and whether site visits and drawings can be provided in English. Ask who will be on site and how progress updates will be communicated to avoid misunderstandings.
How much does kitchen carpentry cost in Lisbon?
Prices are set by each carpenter and paid directly to them, but typical Lisbon ranges help budgeting. Flat-pack kitchen installation often runs €700, €2,000 depending on size, while bespoke cabinetry can be €350, €900 per linear metre; hourly rates are commonly €25, €45. Always request an itemised, written quote separating labour, materials and hardware.
Do I need permits for kitchen carpentry in Lisbon?
Like-for-like cabinet replacement usually needs no permit, but moving plumbing, gas, ventilation or altering walls may require approvals. Check with the Câmara Municipal de Lisboa and your building administration before work begins. For complex renovations, consider an architect or engineer to prepare drawings and manage any submissions.
How long does a kitchen carpentry project take in Lisbon?
A straightforward flat-pack installation can take 1, 3 days once the space is ready, while bespoke kitchens involve 2, 6 weeks for fabrication plus 1, 3 days for fitting. Lead times to start can extend 2, 4 weeks in busy periods. Confirm milestones, delivery dates and access arrangements in your contract.
Can Lisbon carpenters install IKEA or other flat-pack kitchens?
Most Lisbon carpenters regularly install IKEA and other flat-pack kitchens, providing precise measurements, levelling, scribing to uneven walls, and worktop cutting. Ask whether appliance integration, sink cut-outs and silicone sealing are included, and who handles disposal of packaging. Share your design code or planner file to speed things up.
How can I vet a kitchen carpenter’s quality?
Assess quality by reviewing recent kitchen portfolios, independent reviews and speaking to two references. Ask about moisture-resistant materials (e.g., ‘hidrófugo’ MDF), branded hardware such as Blum or Hettich, and workmanship guarantees. Insist on a written scope with drawings, finishes, hardware specs and a snagging process.
What information should I provide to get accurate quotes?
Share a measured plan with ceiling height, service positions, and appliance models, plus photos and access details (parking, lift, stairs). Specify carcass and door materials, worktop type, splashback, lighting, and whether other trades are required. Be clear on timelines and whether you need dismantling of old units and waste removal.
Which materials work best for Lisbon kitchens?
Lisbon kitchens commonly use laminated or moisture-resistant MDF, plywood, or solid wood for cabinetry, with quartz, compact laminate, granite or solid wood worktops. Ask about FSC-certified timber and finishes suited to coastal humidity. Your carpenter can advise on durability, maintenance and price differences before ordering.
How do carpenters handle uneven walls in older Lisbon buildings?
Many Lisbon homes have uneven walls and floors; experienced carpenters allow for scribing, packing and custom fillers to achieve clean lines. Confirm templating for worktops and how gaps will be treated. If plumbing or electrics shift, ensure coordination with qualified trades and that final levels suit appliance ventilation clearances.
Do carpenters offer warranties and what should my contract include?
Request a written contract covering drawings, materials, hardware brands, timeline, milestones, and a snagging and aftercare policy. Many carpenters offer workmanship guarantees; confirm duration and what’s excluded. Agree staged payments and receipts directly with the carpenter, and keep all product warranties for appliances and worktops.

Dos and Don’ts as an expat

Essential dos and don’ts for selecting the perfect carpenter for your kitchen

Do’s
Do Review Their Portfolio of Kitchen Projects
When hiring a carpenter for your kitchen, always ask for a portfolio of their previous work. Reviewing past projects provides insights into their style, craftsmanship, and versatility. This will help you understand if their experience aligns with your design vision and quality expectations.
Do Seek Out Customer References
Before making a decision, request references from previous clients who have had similar kitchen projects completed. Speaking with these past customers will give you an idea of the carpenter's work ethic, reliability, and overall satisfaction of their clients, ensuring you make an informed hiring choice.
Do Discuss Clear Timelines and Budgets
Establishing a clear timeline and budget upfront is crucial when working with a carpenter for your kitchen. Good carpenters will provide you with a detailed estimate and timeline, helping you avoid unexpected delays and costs. Ensure everything is documented for transparency.
Do Inquire About Material Options
An excellent carpenter should be knowledgeable about various materials and their suitability for your kitchen project. Discuss different options available for cabinetry, countertops, and finishes, and seek their recommendations based on durability, aesthetics, and budget to ensure long-lasting results.
Dont’s
Don't Hire a Carpenter Without a Portfolio
Hiring a carpenter without examining their portfolio can lead to disappointing results. A lack of showcased work may indicate insufficient experience or quality. Always request examples of previous kitchen projects to ensure their style and craftsmanship align with your expectations.
Don't Ignore Customer Reviews and Testimonials
Failing to research customer reviews can result in choosing a carpenter with a poor reputation for reliability or quality. Take the time to read testimonials and check online ratings to gauge others' experiences before making a commitment. This can save time, money, and frustration.
Don't Skip the Written Estimate
Neglecting to obtain a written estimate can result in unexpected costs later on. Ensure all details, such as materials used and labor costs, are clearly outlined in the quote. A lack of a formal estimate can lead to misunderstandings about the project's scope and price.
Don't Overlook Communication Skills
Choosing a carpenter with poor communication skills can lead to a frustrating renovation process. Clear communication is essential for understanding your vision and addressing any concerns. Make sure the carpenter can articulate their ideas and listen to your needs effectively.
