Sophie

Lisbon, Aug 2025

I started working with Tiago after trying his group classes at my gym because his workouts were well planned and he is calm and quietly motivational, not shouty. We trained once a week from around December or January until June, and he taught me to use equipment I would never touch like the sled, wrote me a personal workout plan in Excel for non-session days, and talked through nutrition. I wanted to lose weight and get stronger, and he kept me going through the gloomy winter, super organized, on time, and easy to coordinate with on WhatsApp, even coming in on what should have been his day off. Price felt fair, and I liked that he really knows the science of how the body works, which made our sessions make sense.

Lisbon, Sep 2026

I’ve been training with Rui for seven months now, and he is fantastic, really brilliant. I’ve had great gains and improvements, I dropped five pounds, lost 4% body fat, and he is hyper focused on my form and making sure I’m lifting properly and in the right position. He is always there, always pleasant, and he even laughs at my stupid jokes. The price feels fair, and I kept going past the first three months because he does such an exceptional job.

Cascais, Aug 2026

Nicola is very knowledgeable and I really enjoy the sessions with her. She creates an environment that is very fun and also individual, even in a group class, because we can decide things like what weights we want to use and there are different levels of intensity for the exercises. It feels personalized and also fun because it is a group. I only have positive things to say and I would definitely recommend her.

Frequently Asked Questions

What expats want to know before hiring fitness trainers in Lisbon.

How much does a personal trainer cost in Lisbon?
A one-to-one session averages around €45, ranging roughly €13 to €60 depending on the trainer and setting. Buying a block of sessions or training as a pair brings the price down a lot.
Are there English-speaking personal trainers in Lisbon?
Yes, plenty work with the international community in English, in gyms, outdoors and online. We list ones reviewed by other expats.
Where do personal trainers work, the gym, my home or online?
All of those. Many train you at a gym, some come to your home or train outdoors to make the most of Lisbon weather, and others offer online coaching. Each listing shows what they offer.
How do I pick a trainer for my goals?
Be clear whether you want strength, weight loss, mobility or general fitness, then read reviews from clients with similar goals. Most trainers offer a trial session so you can see if you click before committing.
What should I avoid?
Avoid paying for a big block of sessions before a trial, and be wary of anyone promising dramatic results on a fixed timeline. A good trainer sets realistic expectations.
How do you say personal trainer in Portuguese?
Most people just say personal trainer in Portugal, or treinador pessoal. Either works to search for, and most trainers here speak English.
How do I find a personal trainer I can trust in Lisbon?
Check reviews and, where offered, do a trial session. On Locallista the reviews are phone-verified and ranked on real expat experience, not who paid the most.

Dos and Don’ts as an expat

Essential dos and don’ts for finding the perfect fitness trainer to elevate your health journey

Do’s
Do Choose a Trainer Who Personalizes Workouts
Look for trainers who customize workout plans to fit your individual needs and goals. Personalization, considering your health concerns and fitness levels, ensures you make progress and stay motivated throughout your fitness journey.
Do Seek Trainers with Strong Communication Skills
Select trainers who communicate clearly and effectively, explaining exercises and techniques in an easily understandable manner. Good communication enhances your understanding and execution of exercises, fostering a better training experience.
Do Consider Their Nutritional Knowledge
Opt for trainers who can provide nutrition advice and support alongside workout routines. A comprehensive approach that includes dietary advice can greatly enhance your fitness results and overall well-being.
Do Look for Trainers with a Supportive Attitude
Choose trainers who display empathy and support, making you feel valued and understood. A positive and encouraging atmosphere can significantly impact your motivation and commitment to achieving fitness goals.
Do Verify Their Flexibility in Training Options
Check if trainers offer flexible training options, such as in-person, online, or home workouts. Flexibility in training venues and schedules can make it easier for you to stick to your fitness regimen even with a busy lifestyle.
Dont’s
Don't Ignore Availability and Flexibility of Scheduling
Make sure your trainer has flexible scheduling options that work with your lifestyle. Many reviews highlight that rigid schedules can lead to missed sessions or lack of consistency in training, which ultimately affects your progress.
Don't Underestimate the Importance of Personalization
Avoid trainers who provide generic workout programs. Reviews emphasize that a tailored approach is crucial for meeting individual needs and goals, especially for those with specific health concerns or fitness levels.
Don't Overlook Communication Skills
Ensure your trainer communicates effectively, clearly explaining exercises and modifications. Poor communication can lead to misunderstandings and hinder your ability to perform exercises correctly, impacting your safety and progress.
Don't Choose a Trainer Without Checking Punctuality
Punctuality is often essential to maintaining a consistent workout routine. Many reviews mention that late arrivals can disrupt training schedules and become frustrating, undermining your overall commitment to fitness goals.
