Matt was very helpful and very adjustable organizing his schedule to match my needs, and he was available quite quickly. I had an issue with fixing a roof, he seemed very knowledgeable and started right away working on the fixes. After a day or so there was rain and everything seems to be fine because no rain water came inside, so in that sense the job was very well done and I was satisfied. I did need to give a prepayment for the materials and I was a bit worried because of scammers nowadays, but he called me right away and explained how it works.

I had Matt do a quick job to patch some holes in the plaster. He did a good job and, in my experience, he seemed like a good person and very honest, but he didn’t tell me the plaster would shrink, so when I came back it looked really bad. He actually came all the way back and fixed it, which I appreciate, though I would have assumed he would have taken that into consideration. Price felt a bit expensive, but overall he resolved the problem and I wouldn’t give him bad reviews.

Matt fixed the tiles on our roof where we had a leak, and while he was up there he identified more things happening and patched everything he saw. Communication was super good - he got back to me quickly, came when he said he would, and kept me updated about the rain since the timing was weather-dependent. We live in a four-story walk-up and he still handled it, and we’re having him back to fix the water damage inside, either replace the ceiling or sand and paint once it dries. The price felt very fair, and honestly he was kind of a godsend when no one else would come during the crazy storms.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can expats find reliable, English-speaking plaster contractors in Lisbon?
Shortlist contractors who explicitly offer English or your preferred language, then examine portfolios with before‑and‑after photos and recent client reviews. Arrange a quick WhatsApp or phone chat followed by a site visit to gauge communication and expertise. Ask for an itemised, written quote and clear timeline before you commit.
What plastering services are most common in Lisbon?
Lisbon contractors typically handle skim coats, full re‑plastering, drywall finishing, ceiling repairs after leaks, and decorative work such as cornices and mouldings. Specialists also offer lime plaster for heritage homes and exterior stucco. Confirm whether prep, priming, and painting are included or quoted separately.
How much does plastering cost in Lisbon?
As a general guide, minor repairs often start around €80, €150 call‑out, skim coating walls commonly ranges €10, €20 per m², full re‑plastering €20, €35 per m², and Venetian plaster can exceed €70 per m². Prices are set by each contractor, and you pay them directly. Always seek a site‑specific, itemised quote.
Is lime or gypsum plaster better for older Lisbon buildings?
For traditional masonry and stone, breathable lime plaster helps manage moisture and salts, reducing blistering and mould. Gypsum performs well on dry, stable interiors and new drywall. Ask the contractor to inspect substrate and damp history, then propose a materials plan suited to your building’s age and exposure.
How long does plastering take and what are drying times in Lisbon’s climate?
Small patches may finish in a day, while a typical room can take 1, 3 days depending on prep and coats. Drying varies with season: expect 2, 7 days, longer during humid months. Good airflow or dehumidifiers help avoid cracking and ensure a smooth, paint‑ready surface.
How do I vet a plasterer in Lisbon for quality and reliability?
Request three recent references, plus photos of similar Lisbon projects, and confirm who will do the work daily. Look for a detailed scope covering surface prep, mesh, corner beads, number of coats, and finish level. Ask about dust control, protection of furniture, and a workmanship warranty.
Can plasterers in Lisbon fix water damage and damp issues?
Yes, many handle ceiling and wall repairs after leaks, but lasting results require tackling the moisture source first. Expect salt‑neutralising, mould treatment, and breathable materials where appropriate. For complex leaks, your plasterer may recommend coordinating with a roofer or plumber before re‑plastering.
What should a professional plastering quote include?
A clear quote should itemise labour, materials, surface preparation, protection, waste removal, number of coats, finish type, and any decorative elements. It should state start and completion dates, access needs, and payment schedule. Clarify exclusions such as painting, cornice restoration, or unexpected substrate repairs.
Is plastering messy, and can it be done while I live in the flat?
Professional teams should protect floors, furniture, and sockets, use dust extraction where feasible, and tidy daily. Work can proceed in occupied homes with room‑by‑room scheduling. Agree on working hours, lift and parking access, and daily clean‑up standards to minimise disruption.
Are decorative finishes like Venetian plaster available in Lisbon?
Yes, specialists offer Venetian plaster, microcement‑style finishes, and polished lime decorative coats. Ask for sample boards, discuss sheen and colour, and confirm maintenance needs in kitchens or bathrooms. Lead times and costs are higher than standard plastering, so plan approvals and budget accordingly.

Dos and Don’ts as an expat

Smart choices: dos and don’ts for hiring the right plaster contractors

Do’s
Do Evaluate Their Portfolio of Past Work
Before hiring a plaster contractor, examine their portfolio of completed projects. Look for a variety of styles and successful finishes to ensure their work meets your aesthetic and quality standards. A solid portfolio will give you confidence in their skills and versatility.
Do Check Customer Testimonials
Seek out customer testimonials and reviews on the contractor's website or third-party platforms. Positive feedback from previous clients about reliability, quality of work, and professionalism can help you make an informed choice and recognize trustworthy service providers.
Do Ask About Material Choices
Inquire about the types of materials the plaster contractor uses for various jobs. A knowledgeable contractor should be able to recommend high-quality materials that will perform well and last longer, protecting your investment and improving the overall appearance of your property.
Do Request Detailed Estimates
Ask for a detailed written estimate that outlines the scope of work, materials, and costs involved. A transparent estimate can help prevent unexpected expenses and scope changes later in the project, ensuring you understand what to expect throughout the process.
Dont’s
Don't Hire Plaster Contractors Without Verifiable References
Always demand references from plaster contractors and check their past work. Many customers have reported issues with contractors who could not provide verifiable projects, leading to poor workmanship and unfulfilled promises.
Don't Ignore the Importance of a Detailed Quote
Ensure the contractor provides a comprehensive written quote that covers all aspects of the job. Clients have faced unexpected costs due to vague or incomplete estimates, resulting in budget overruns and disputes.
Don't Skip Research on Licensing and Insurance
Verify that your plaster contractor holds the necessary licenses and insurance before hiring. Many have encountered issues with unlicensed contractors, leading to liability concerns and inadequate recourse in case of poor work.
Don't Choose a Contractor Based on Price Alone
While it might be tempting to select the lowest price, this can often lead to poor quality work and additional expenses down the line. It’s essential to evaluate contractors based on their experience, quality of work, and customer feedback, not just on cost.
