Lisbon on Oct 2025

Everything was done quickly and clearly, no issues noticed so far. At the moment I’d rate it a 10/10, but let’s see how it holds up over time.

Lisbon on Oct 2025

I've brought several of my cars to HyperDrive, and they’ve always been excellent. The first time was with my Porsche 911 Carrera T, the air conditioning smelled awful, and it turned out there was a dead bird stuck in the vent. The team found it, cleaned everything, and fixed it within days, while Porsche’s official service couldn’t take me for a month. They’ve also worked on my Taycan (rattling roof) and my Mini (front noise), both solved quickly. Communication is great, they answer by phone, WhatsApp, or Telegram, always clear and responsive. They really know what they’re doing, work fast, and treat you like a valued client.

Lisbon on Dec 2025

My car broke down and it was a bit of an emergency, so I phoned and spoke to two people who said no worries, bring the car in, and I got it towed straight away. They kept it overnight to do diagnostics, kept in touch with me on WhatsApp every day, showed me what the cost would be before doing anything, and the invoice was itemized and very clean. Prices felt fair and they were very transparent and organized, and they said it might take until the end of next week but they actually finished it the next day. I cannot complain and would definitely use them again.

Frequently Asked Questions

What documents do I need to rent a car in Lisbon?
To rent a car in Lisbon, you’ll typically need a valid passport or ID, a driving licence held for 1, 2 years, and a credit card in the main driver’s name for the deposit. Some companies may also request proof of address or travel details. Always check the provider’s terms before booking.
Do I need an International Driving Permit to hire a car in Portugal?
Most visitors can rent without an International Driving Permit if their licence is in the Roman alphabet and valid. If your licence uses a non-Latin script, carry an IDP alongside the original. Long‑term residents should confirm local licence exchange rules, but rental acceptance depends on the company’s policy.
How much does car rental cost in Lisbon?
Expect economy car hire in Lisbon from about €20, €40/day off‑peak, rising to €45, €80/day in summer; monthly deals can range €500, €900+. Automatics and airport pick‑ups often cost more, and deposits typically run €800, €1,500. Prices are set by each rental company, paid directly to them, and are not listed on Locallista.
Can I rent a car in Lisbon with a debit card instead of a credit card?
Most Lisbon car hire companies require a credit card in the main driver’s name for the security deposit. Some accept debit cards with stricter terms, such as full insurance, higher deposits, or limited vehicle classes, while prepaid cards are rarely allowed. Always confirm card policy before reserving.
What insurance do I need for car hire in Portugal?
Standard rentals include third‑party cover and Collision Damage Waiver with an excess you must pay if there’s damage. You can reduce or eliminate the excess with Super CDW or excess waiver, and add theft, tyres, glass and roadside assistance. Photograph the car at pick‑up and confirm what’s excluded.
How do tolls and Via Verde work for rental cars in Lisbon?
Portugal uses electronic tolls; most Lisbon rentals offer a Via Verde transponder so charges are recorded automatically. You’ll pay tolls plus a small daily device fee or admin cost, depending on the company. Confirm how and when tolls are billed, as some roads have no pay booths and require electronic payment.
Can I book an automatic car and child seats in Lisbon?
Automatic cars exist but supply is limited and pricier; book early. Child seats, boosters, and ISOFIX are available on request and must be reserved in advance; Portuguese law requires appropriate restraints for children. Providers charge a daily fee and may need the child’s age/weight to assign the right seat.
Are one-way rentals and driving a Lisbon hire car to Spain allowed?
One‑way rentals within Portugal (e.g., Lisbon to Porto or Faro) are usually possible for a drop‑off fee. Cross‑border travel to Spain is commonly allowed, but you must request permission in advance and may need extra insurance or documentation. Some vehicle categories are restricted, so confirm before booking.
What is the minimum age to rent a car in Lisbon?
In Lisbon, minimum rental age typically ranges from 21 to 25, depending on the provider and vehicle class. Drivers under 25 often pay a young driver surcharge and may need 1, 2 years’ licence holding. Premium cars can have higher age thresholds and stricter experience requirements.
How can I find vetted, English-speaking car rental companies in Lisbon?
To find vetted, English‑speaking car rental companies in Lisbon, use curated directories with transparent reviews, such as Locallista. Look for consistently high ratings, clear insurance and deposit terms, and quick responses on WhatsApp or phone. Shortlist two to three providers and compare like‑for‑like quotes and conditions.

Dos and Don’ts as an expat

Navigating the world of car renting: essential dos and don’ts for a seamless experience

Do’s
Do Rent from Responsive Providers
Choose a car rental service where the owner or representative is quick to respond. This ensures a smooth rental process and allows you to address any concerns or requests efficiently, making your experience stress-free.
Do Check for Vehicle Condition
Always inquire about the cleanliness and maintenance of the vehicles. A reliable service should ensure that all cars are well-maintained and meet advertised standards, giving you confidence in your rental.
Do Verify Pickup and Drop-off Convenience
Look for rental services that offer flexible and convenient pickup and drop-off options. This can save you time and enhance your overall experience, making the transition between vehicles hassle-free.
Do Assess Adaptability to Customer Needs
Select a rental provider known for their adaptability to customer preferences. Being able to switch between different vehicles ensures that you find the best fit for your specific requirements and enhances your satisfaction.
Dont’s
Don't Rent from Providers with Unclear Vehicle Condition Policies
Ensure that the rental provider has clear policies regarding vehicle condition and maintenance. Ambiguity can lead to unexpected issues, such as unreported damage or mechanical problems that may disrupt your experience.
Don't Accept Last-Minute Changes to Rental Terms
Be wary of providers who provide last-minute updates or changes to rental terms, such as vehicle type or features. This may indicate a lack of reliability and could lead to disappointments during your rental period.
Don't Ignore the Importance of Clear Pickup and Drop-off Procedures
Ensure the rental service has straightforward pickup and drop-off processes. Complications in these areas can lead to unnecessary stress and wasted time, which diminishes the overall rental experience.
Don't Underestimate Communication Responsiveness
Prioritize rental services that demonstrate quick and effective communication. A provider's slow response time may indicate problems down the line, such as difficulty resolving issues or receiving support during your rental.
