I went to Carolina for a general checkup and cleaning, and also got some advice on issues with my jaw, a prescription for Sensodyne, and a prescription for an x ray. She was helpful, but the cleaning felt a bit quick and a bit short, and I wanted a more thorough clean, which I’m used to. I also had to wait 30 minutes because the wrong time was put in, although she was apologetic about it. It felt a bit expensive for what it was, and I’m not sure if I would go back again.

I went to Maria initially for my gums to have a clean and needed two sessions - first half of the mouth, then the other half - and it was really good. She’s knowledgeable, very caring and gentle, explains everything, and is super easy to contact and proactive about days that work. My mom visited and Maria did a prosthesis replacement for her, and I went back for a filling yesterday; the work can take a while with my teeth, but my comfort was really good and I was glad when it was finished. The office is very clean and organized, and the price felt really reasonable.

I’ve been a client for a few years and everything is going very, very well. The new place is brand new, clean and modern with all the equipment - they even take before and after photos for implants. They explained my case step by step: tooth decay with infected roots and not enough bone, so first extract the bad teeth and then wait about four to five months before continuing, and they don’t rush the steps. Communication is mostly in English or Portuguese and sometimes with Google Translate since the French speaker isn’t always there, appointments are generally on time, and the price feels fair with my supplementary.

Frequently Asked Questions

What expats want to know before hiring dental hygienists in Lisbon.

Are there English-speaking dental hygienists in Lisbon?
Yes, and more do as the expat community grows. The hard part is knowing who is reliable before you book, so every one we list is reviewed by other expats who have actually used them.
What should I check before hiring dental hygienists in Lisbon?
Read recent reviews, be clear about exactly what you need, and agree the scope and an estimate in writing before any work starts. For anything regulated, check they hold the right credentials for the job.
Are the doctors and dentists properly registered in Lisbon?
Yes. Doctors and dentists must be registered, with the relevant Ordem (Ordem dos Médicos or Médicos Dentistas) in Portugal. Reputable private clinics will confirm their professionals' registration.
What should I avoid when hiring dental hygienists in Lisbon?
Avoid paying the full amount up front (a deposit can be fair), anyone who will not give a clear quote, and unusually cheap prices that get padded with extras later. And never use someone who cannot show the right certification.
How do I explain what I need if my Portuguese is limited?
A photo, a short video or a written list does most of the talking, and the professionals we list are used to international clients. Booking an English-speaking one takes the stress out of it entirely.
How do you say dental hygienists in Portuguese?
In Portuguese, dental hygienists are usually called higienistas orais. That is the word to search for or to ask a neighbour, though many professionals here are used to the English term too.
How do I find dental hygienists I can trust in Lisbon?
Check the reviews and any credentials before you book. On Locallista the reviews are phone-verified and the ranking is based on real expat experience, not who paid the most.
