I found Marina on Instagram and she ended up doing two projects for us. She made a custom wall sculpture for one of our apartments in Alfama - she came to take measurements, worked off our inspiration, handled delivery - and then painted a big octopus mural for our surf house in Peniche, spread across two walls, sketched first, we moved from color to black and white, and she finished it in two days. We kept postponing on our side because the house wasn’t ready, but she stayed super open, quick to reply, approachable, and uncomplicated, and the result looks wonderful and has the big impact we wanted. Price felt fair, and we’re super happy with the work and think guests will be posting photos of that octopus.

We brought in Alice to do a live painting during an exhibition in Lisbon to compliment a live performance. She set up easily, told us what we needed, painted while a dancer and a girl singing performed, and she interacted with people but kept working, really capturing the essence of the event and the artist. The painting reflected the ocean and water theme, this blue line where you kind of see a mermaid person inside, and it sold right after the show. We even used it later in a workshop to project AI on top of it, and I loved how she stayed true to her own style while fitting perfectly into the scene.

Viviana

Lisbon on Oct 2025

I was looking for an old Portuguese map and someone said why not have it painted on the wall, so I called Marina and oh my God, the job she did was amazing. She replicated the Planisterio de Cantina - the first Portuguese map of the navigators’ routes - working 10 or 15 days up on the top of the wall, and then she also painted trees and flowers on my blank walls and drawers so the rooms became lively and vibrant. She really feels what you want, and if something isn’t quite it she changes it completely, all while being super nice, quiet, never in my way, even working Saturday and Sunday and coming on time every time. I was having trouble with the rest of the renovation people, but with her it was incredible.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a custom mural or artistic painting cost in Lisbon?
Prices in Lisbon vary by size, complexity, surface and access. As a guide, small indoor pieces may start around €300-€700, while detailed wall murals often range from €40-€120 per m2, plus materials, protection coats and equipment. Each artist sets their own rates, and you'll arrange payment directly with them.
How can I find an English-speaking artistic painter in Lisbon?
Search for Lisbon artistic painters who list English or bilingual services, then review portfolios and client feedback. Shortlist a few, share photos of your space, and request a quick video or WhatsApp call to confirm communication, style fit and availability. Clear communication upfront prevents misunderstandings and speeds up quoting.
What should I include in a brief to get an accurate quote?
A good brief includes wall dimensions, high-quality photos, surface type, theme or story, colour palette, examples you like, budget range and target deadline. Note access issues (lifts, parking, scaffolding), power supply and any building rules. The clearer your brief, the faster you'll receive accurate concepts and timelines.
How long does a mural or decorative painting usually take in Lisbon?
Timelines depend on preparation, design approval and drying. Simple indoor features may complete within 1-3 days once on site; medium murals 3-7 days; large facades or complex trompe-l'oeil can take 1-3 weeks, plus weather buffers. Many Lisbon artists book out 2-6 weeks ahead - reserve early for preferred dates.
Do I need permission to paint a mural in a rented flat or on an exterior wall?
For rented homes, always obtain written landlord consent before commissioning wall art. Exterior murals may require approval from the condominium administrator and, in some zones, Lisbon City Council - especially near historic areas like Alfama or Baixa. Check building rules on colours, finishes and quiet hours to avoid delays or fines.
Which paints and materials suit Lisbon's climate and coastal conditions?
Lisbon's coastal climate means sun, salt air and winter humidity. For exteriors, artists often specify mineral silicate or UV-stable acrylics, anti-mould primers and protective anti-graffiti varnishes. Indoors, low-VOC acrylics or limewash keep odours minimal. Ask for a materials list and care guide tailored to your wall's substrate.
How can I vet the quality and reliability of a Lisbon mural artist?
Review recent, high-resolution case studies and check consistent quality across different scales. In Lisbon, you can often visit public works - try LX Factory, Marvila or Bairro Padre Cruz - to see finishes in real light. Request references, a sketch or small test patch, and confirm insurance for on-site work.
Are eco-friendly, low-odour paint options available for indoor murals?
Yes. Many Lisbon muralists offer eco-friendly options such as low-VOC acrylics, plant-based binders, limewash and mineral paints with high breathability. These reduce odours and suit homes with children or pets. Discuss indoor ventilation, curing times and any allergy concerns so the painter can propose the safest specification.
What payment terms are typical for art commissions in Lisbon?
Practices vary, but many artists request a 30-50% deposit to secure dates and begin design, with staged or final balance on completion and sign-off. You'll agree rates, invoices and payment method directly with the painter. Clarify what's included, concepts, materials, travel, protection coats, to avoid extras later.
How do I maintain a mural and how long will it last?
Interior murals usually need only occasional dusting with a dry cloth; avoid abrasive cleaners. For exteriors in Lisbon's sea air, a protective varnish helps - expect gentle wash-downs and possible re-coating every 2-3 years. Ask for leftover paint and colour codes for easy touch-ups after knocks or repairs.

Dos and Don’ts as an expat

Mastering your selection: essential dos and don’ts for finding the ideal artistic painter

Do’s
Do Prioritize Open Communication
Select an artistic painter who emphasizes open communication throughout the creative process. This ensures your ideas and feedback are valued and incorporated into the artwork, leading to a final piece that aligns with your vision.
Do Look for Attention to Detail
Choose a painter known for their meticulous attention to detail. This quality can significantly enhance the final artwork, ensuring that the colors, themes, and elements are crafted beautifully, thus creating a masterpiece that captivates and resonates.
Do Seek Testimonials on Timeliness
Consider the painter's reputation for meeting deadlines. A commitment to timely delivery not only reflects professionalism but also minimizes stress during the project, allowing for a smooth and satisfying collaboration.
Do Check for Creative Flexibility
Find an artist who showcases creative flexibility and can adapt to your changing ideas. Their willingness to explore new concepts and incorporate your feedback can lead to innovative and personalized artwork that truly represents your vision.
Dont’s
Don't Neglect Communication Before Hiring
Failing to ensure clear communication and responsiveness during initial inquiries may signal potential issues during the project. A service provider who is slow to respond before being hired may not prioritize your project once engaged.
Don't Ignore Portfolio and Style Compatibility
Choosing an artist without reviewing their past work may result in a mismatch between your vision and their style. It's essential to ensure that their artistic approach aligns with your desired outcome to avoid dissatisfaction.
Don't Overlook Experience with Specific Projects
Hiring a painter or illustrator without confirming their relevant experience for your specific needs, such as murals or custom illustrations, could lead to unmet expectations. Prioritize artists with proven success in the exact type of work you require.
Don't Wait Until the Last Minute to Discuss Deadlines
Delaying discussions about project timelines can lead to frustration if deadlines are not met. Ensure that the service provider understands your schedule and can confirm their capability to deliver within your required timeframe.
