We have two labs, and Pedro scheduled one dog each day, came right on time to pick them up, took them to the facility, and when we had to reschedule he was very accommodating and nice. He sent me pictures while he was doing the grooming; I didn’t see the facility, but the photos looked great and my dogs seemed to enjoy their time there. They came back smelling and looking wonderful, and since I don’t have a car the pickup and return was really nice. The price felt about normal, maybe a little high, but overall a really good experience.

Igor is an excellent dog walker who genuinely cares for animals, as witnessed by his work training dogs at a shelter. Our dog already has a strong bond with him and gets excited every time he arrives--which tells me everything I need to know about trust. He sends photos of each walk and communicates regularly and clearly. With life in a big city, there can sometimes be traffic/mass transit delays, but, he always meets our expectations, and his pricing is fair and competitive. We're thrilled to have found him and recommend him wholeheartedly.

She is wonderful with dogs and has done an amazing job with our big dog. We first had her for sitting and now we have her doing training too, and she’s been very flexible - she put up with our schedule disruption and even stayed a bit extra when things ran late. She would send us pictures on WhatsApp, she was punctual always, and she’s very polite, a lovely lady. Price felt fair and we’re very happy, so we continue to use her.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I find English-speaking dog trainers in Lisbon?
You’ll find many English-speaking dog trainers across Lisbon, especially in expat-friendly areas such as Estrela, Campo de Ourique, Parque das Nações and along the Cascais line. Search reputable directories, read verified reviews, and contact trainers directly via WhatsApp or phone to confirm language options, availability and the services they provide.
How much does dog training cost in Lisbon?
Prices are set by individual trainers and vary by service, location and experience. In Lisbon, expect roughly €35, €60 for group classes, €45, €90 for private in‑home sessions, and €70, €140 for complex behaviour cases. You pay the trainer directly; fees aren’t listed on Locallista, so request a written quote before booking.
What training methods do reputable Lisbon dog trainers use?
Top Lisbon trainers typically use positive reinforcement, fear‑free methods and clicker training, focusing on rewards rather than punishment. Ask how they assess behaviour, set goals, and measure progress, and request a sample training plan. Avoid anyone promoting harsh tools or guaranteed fixes for complex issues like reactivity or separation anxiety.
Should I choose private in‑home training or group classes in Lisbon?
Private in‑home training suits puppies, rescue dogs and behaviour issues needing personalised attention, with faster feedback tailored to your household. Group classes in Lisbon are cost‑effective for socialisation and obedience around distractions; look for small class sizes (ideally 4, 8 dogs). Reactive or fearful dogs often benefit from private sessions first.
How do I vet a dog trainer’s quality before booking?
Check independent reviews, ask for recent case studies, and verify what methods they use. Arrange an initial assessment or paid trial to see how your dog responds and how clearly the trainer communicates. Strong professionals provide clear goals, written homework, and transparent policies on cancellations, follow‑ups and progress reporting.
Can Lisbon dog trainers help with separation anxiety or leash reactivity?
Yes, many Lisbon trainers and behaviourists support separation anxiety, leash reactivity and rescue transitions common to city living. Expect a structured plan combining at‑home routines with carefully managed outdoor practice, often starting in quieter streets before busier zones. Severe cases may need a behaviourist and coordination with your vet.
How quickly will I see results from puppy training in Lisbon?
For basic manners and puppy foundations, many owners see progress within 3, 6 sessions when they practise daily between visits. Behaviour modification for issues like aggression or anxiety can take several weeks to months. Consistency, realistic goals, and a calm home routine are crucial to sustaining results in Lisbon’s urban environment.
Are English-language puppy socialisation classes available in Lisbon?
English‑friendly puppy socialisation classes are available in Lisbon and often bilingual. Look for controlled enrolment, clean spaces, vaccinated participants, and structured exercises that build confidence, handling, recall, settling, and polite greetings. Ask about age windows (8, 16 weeks), class size, and how the trainer supports apartment living and lift etiquette.
Where do training sessions usually take place in Lisbon, and what are the leash rules?
Sessions commonly happen at your home, local parks, riverside promenades, or designated dog areas. Lisbon generally requires dogs on lead in public spaces, with off‑lead allowed only in signed dog parks; certain breeds must wear a muzzle under Portuguese rules. Your trainer will advise suitable training spots and safe setups.
How do I contact and schedule with a dog trainer in Lisbon?
Most Lisbon trainers prefer initial contact via WhatsApp or phone and will ask about your dog’s age, history, goals and vaccination status. Share videos of behaviours if possible, and request availability, travel fees, and homework expectations. Confirm cancellation terms and the meeting location before your first session.

Dos and Don’ts as an expat
Essential dos and don’ts for choosing the right dog trainer for your furry companion
Do’s
Do Choose Trainers Who Prioritize Understanding Your Dog's Unique Needs
Select a trainer who takes the time to assess your dog's individual behavior and emotional state. This personalized approach ensures that training methods are tailored specifically to address the unique challenges and needs of your pet.
Do Look for Trainers with Strong Communication Skills
Opt for trainers who maintain open lines of communication and provide ongoing support outside of scheduled sessions. This ensures you receive valuable insights, advice, and reassurance, contributing to the overall success of your training journey.
Do Seek Out Trainers with Proven Results in Behavior Modification
Research trainers who have successfully helped other dogs with similar issues, particularly regarding behavioral problems like reactivity and anxiety. Client testimonials highlighting significant improvements can guide you to a trainer who delivers effective results.
Do Consider Trainers Who Offer Flexible Training Options
Find a trainer who provides various training formats, including one-on-one sessions and group classes. This flexibility allows for a diverse training experience, making it easier to address socialization skills and real-world behaviors in different environments.
Dont’s
Don't Ignore Communication Style
Selecting a dog trainer who lacks effective communication can lead to misunderstandings and frustration. It's crucial to ensure your trainer is approachable and willing to provide updates and advice even outside of scheduled sessions.
Don't Rush the Training Process
Avoid trainers who promise quick fixes or instant results. Training takes time, and a responsible trainer will emphasize gradual improvement and set realistic expectations for both your dog's behavior and your training journey.
Don't Settle for Generic Approaches
Beware of trainers who apply one-size-fits-all methods without assessing your dog’s individual needs. A good trainer should tailor their approach to address specific behavioral issues and establish a customized plan that suits your dog’s environment.
Don't Overlook Trainer Availability
If a trainer is often unavailable or manages a high number of clients, you may not receive the consistent support needed for successful training. Ensure your trainer can commit to your needs and is responsive when questions or concerns arise.
