Petra has hosted four wine workshops for our social club, starting with an intro that went from light whites to rosés to reds, and then themed sessions like all rosés and a sparkling night. She brings color handouts and a tasting wheel, gives background on each wine - region and grapes and what makes it unique - and answers any question without making anyone feel dumb; I recommend her highly. She’s professional, super friendly, and honestly passionate with a peppy zip, and the price felt fair with good tastings and lots of learning. She was on time and adaptable with latecomers, we had vegetarian food pairings at House of Wonders, and we’re even planning a little wine tour with her because it’s been such a good experience.

My journey with wine has been enriched by Gabriela's expertise, having known her since her days as the chef sommelier at the Ritz. As WSET 3 alumni with my wife, we were amazed by the introduction to diverse Portuguese wines, uncovering incredible grape varieties we hadn't encountered before. Gabriela's passion and skill in blind tastings consistently uncover hidden gems, making each visit a unique experience.

I’ve been in the wine world for about 30 years and have been to hundreds of tastings, and Petra’s workshops stood out. I attended three - an overview of Portuguese wine, then deep dives into Dão and Alentejo - and she came prepared with excellent wines and info sheets, answered every question, and even handled my mischievous comments with grace. The pairings at a vegetarian restaurant were spot on, the sessions ran about 2.5 hours without feeling rushed, and we even had time to review and retaste; I bought most of the wines from the first two tastings because they were so good. Not inexpensive but certainly worth the money, easily the best I’ve had in Portugal and among the best anywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I check before hiring sommeliers in Lisbon?
Read recent reviews, be clear about exactly what you need, and agree the scope and an estimate in writing before any work starts. For anything regulated, check they hold the right credentials for the job.
What is the most important thing to know before booking?
Be clear about what you want and get the price and scope agreed up front, so there are no surprises. Reading other expats' reviews is the quickest way to find someone who does the job well and communicates clearly.
What should I avoid when hiring sommeliers in Lisbon?
Avoid paying the full amount up front (a deposit can be fair), anyone who will not give a clear quote, and unusually cheap prices that get padded with extras later.
How do I explain what I need if my Portuguese is limited?
A photo, a short video or a written list does most of the talking, and the professionals we list are used to international clients. Booking an English-speaking one takes the stress out of it entirely.
How do you say sommeliers in Portuguese?
In Portuguese, sommeliers are usually called escancoes (sommeliers). That is the word to search for or to ask a neighbour, though many professionals here are used to the English term too.

Do Seek Personalized Recommendations
Look for service providers who take the time to understand your preferences and interests. Personalized wine selections tailored to your taste can enhance your experience and introduce you to wonderful new options you might not have discovered otherwise.
Do Choose Educators with Depth of Knowledge
Select sommeliers who offer educational workshops and tastings that delve deep into wine history, grape varieties, and regional specialties. Providers with a passion for teaching can significantly elevate your wine appreciation and enjoyment.
Do Attend Wine Events and Tastings
Participating in wine tastings and events helps you learn about diverse selections and enhances the overall experience. Look for sommeliers who host engaging, informative, and enjoyable wine experiences, ensuring a memorable and enriching outing.
Do Look for Engaging Communication Styles
Choosing a sommelier with an approachable and engaging communication style can greatly enhance your experience. A good provider should make you feel comfortable to ask questions, share insights about wine, and provide tailored recommendations.
Dont’s
Don't Select a Sommelier with Limited Wine Knowledge
Choosing a sommelier who does not possess extensive knowledge about diverse wine varieties and regions can lead to uninspiring recommendations. Ensure your sommelier is well-versed in wine to enhance your tasting experience with engaging and tailored choices.
Don't Compromise on Personalization
Avoid sommeliers who fail to listen and adapt to your specific preferences and interests. A lack of personalized service can diminish your experience, resulting in a selection that doesn't match your taste and misses opportunities for discovery.
Don't Ignore the Importance of Educational Value
Selecting a sommelier solely for their wine selection without considering their ability to provide educational insights can lead to a lackluster experience. Ensure they can enrich your understanding of wine through engaging discussions and informative workshops.
Don't Overlook Reviews and Recommendations
Relying on a sommelier without reading reviews or asking for recommendations can lead to unexpected disappointments. Prioritize those with a proven track record and positive feedback to ensure a satisfying and memorable wine experience.
