Joerg

Lisbon on Sep 2025

I met Carl as a DJ at a party and later hired him for my birthday. His knowledge of music is quite deep, with a specialty in disco-funk and soul from the 70s to today, and he really felt what to play, mingled with guests, and collected what people wanted. He came very early, did a proper soundcheck, took care of the sound system, and even helped fix a technical problem, and we skipped vinyl because the wooden floor would vibrate - that was a professional call. Price felt fair.

Lisbon on Sep 2024

For our social dinner, Diogo's music brought everyone together. His band adapted wonderfully to my taste, even taking requests, and he consistently creates an atmosphere where people just want to sing along. I particularly appreciate how he recognizes the audience vibe and includes Portuguese songs when needed.

From start to finish, everything about our wedding was seamless thanks to Hugo. He organized everything perfectly, from the equipment to the lighting, and the song selection was amazing. Our wedding was a complete success, and there's truly nothing I would change about the experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I book a DJ or live band in Lisbon?
For peak wedding and event season in Lisbon (May to September), book DJs and musicians 6, 12 months ahead, especially for weekends. Off‑season or weekday bookings can often be secured 2, 3 months in advance. Last‑minute options exist, but availability and choice may be limited.
How much does a DJ or musician cost in Lisbon?
Typical Lisbon rates vary by experience, equipment and event length. As a guide, private‑event DJs often range from €500, €1,200+, solo/duo musicians from €300, €800, and full live bands from €1,200, €3,500+. All prices are set by individual providers and agreed directly with them, with extras like lighting or overtime adding cost.
Do DJs and musicians in Lisbon provide their own sound and lighting?
Many DJs bring a full PA, controller, microphones and basic lighting, while bands may offer PA for small to mid‑sized events. Larger venues or outdoor spaces might require additional rental. Always confirm power needs (Portugal uses 230V Type F) and whether the venue has sound limiters.
Can DJs and musicians in Lisbon perform in English and act as MCs?
Yes, many Lisbon DJs and musicians are fluent in English and used to international crowds. If you need an English‑speaking MC for introductions or speeches, confirm this service in advance and agree on scripts, cues and pronunciation of names to keep the flow seamless.
How do I vet the quality and reliability of a DJ or live band in Lisbon?
Review recent client feedback, watch performance videos or sample mixes, and request references. Ask for a written agreement covering timings, setup, equipment, breaks and contingency plans. Clarify backup gear, arrival times and attire to ensure a professional, stress‑free performance.
What permits or restrictions apply to music at outdoor events in Lisbon?
Lisbon has strict noise rules, especially after 23:00, and many venues use sound limiters. Public spaces often require permits from Câmara Municipal de Lisboa, and venues typically advise on performance rights. Always check local regulations and coordinate with your venue and provider well in advance.
What are typical set lengths and breaks for DJs and live bands?
DJs commonly perform 3, 5 hour sets with short comfort breaks, and can extend for an agreed overtime fee. Live bands usually play 2, 3 sets of 45, 60 minutes with 10, 20 minute intervals. Arrange background playlists during breaks to keep the atmosphere consistent.
Can Lisbon DJs and musicians handle mixed international playlists?
Absolutely, most are experienced with multi‑cultural weddings and corporate events. Share a must‑play list, do‑not‑play list and key moments (entrance, first dance, last song). Provide any special cultural tracks in advance to ensure smooth cues and proper versions.
What happens if a DJ or musician cancels or equipment fails on the day?
Reputable professionals outline contingency plans, including backup equipment and a network of stand‑ins. Ensure your agreement details substitution procedures, response times and any partial refunds. Clear communication before the event reduces risk and keeps the party running.
Are travel or setup fees common for events outside central Lisbon?
Many providers include travel within central Lisbon, with additional costs for locations like Cascais, Sintra, Setúbal or the Costa da Caparica. Extra setup for multiple areas (ceremony, cocktail, dinner, party) may also be itemised. Confirm a detailed, all‑inclusive quote directly with the provider.

Dos and Don’ts as an expat

Smart choices: dos and don’ts for hiring the perfect DJs and musicians for your event

Do’s
Do Prioritize Providers Who Personalize Their Services
Look for DJs and musicians who take the time to personalize their playlists and performances to match your specific event theme and vibe. Personalized experiences create unforgettable moments for you and your guests.
Do Hire Professionals with Strong Communication Skills
Select service providers known for their clear and timely communication, as this will ensure smooth planning and execution of your event. Effective communicators can quickly address your needs and provide necessary updates, enhancing your overall experience.
Do Consider Artists Who Incorporate Live Performances
Choose DJs and musicians who can collaborate with other artists or provide live elements to their sets. This adds a unique touch to your event and elevates the ambiance, leaving a lasting impression on your guests.
Do Check for Adaptability and Punctuality
Look for service providers who display adaptability in adjusting to changing event needs and show up punctually. A professional who arrives on time and can handle unexpected challenges ensures that your event proceeds smoothly.
Dont’s
Don't Hire Without Checking Technical Capabilities
Ensure the DJ or musician you choose has solid technical skills, as poor equipment management or sound issues can ruin your event. Always confirm they have backup plans for unexpected technical difficulties to avoid interruptions.
Don't Ignore Communication and Responsiveness
Choose a service provider who communicates effectively and responds promptly during the booking process. A lack of communication can lead to misunderstandings regarding your event's specific needs and hinder smooth coordination.
Don't Skip Over Personalization Needs
Avoid hiring a musician or DJ without discussing your specific event vibe and song preferences. Personalization is crucial for creating the desired atmosphere, as a generic set may not resonate with your guests or fit the theme.
Don't Forget to Confirm Availability and Punctuality
Choose a service provider known for reliability and punctuality. Last-minute cancellations or tardiness can jeopardize the success of your event, so verify their schedule and commitment to arrive early for setup.
