While the overall experience was great, unfortunately Alexis was not able to help me with the acute shoulder pain I was experiencing, which was the reason for making an appointment to begin with. He was friendly, considerate and professional, communication was timely and clear and he was perfectly on time. I thought the price was quite high given the issue wasn't fixed.

I’m an old professional athlete with permanent back and torn muscle issues, and I met Ferda through a friend. She’s very good at osteopathy and uses dry needles, and she resolved more or less 70-80% of my problems, so I still keep on seeing her. Sessions are long and intense at the start and then more like recovery touches, and she’s very on time - actually better than me - and the price felt very reasonable for the time she gives. Sometimes I think she could use a bigger place so people don’t wait, but overall she’s become a very permanent person in my life.

David has been my go-to for 14 years for anything my mind, body, and soul need. His therapy sessions, which blend various techniques including crystals, always leave me feeling peaceful and lighter. The atmosphere in his studio is calming and zen, making it easy to relax and find inner peace.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an osteopath cost in Lisbon?
In Lisbon, a standard osteopathy session typically costs €50, 85, with initial consultations sometimes slightly higher due to longer assessments. Prices are set by each practitioner or clinic, and you pay them directly. Fees are not listed on Locallista, so confirm current rates when you book.
Do I need a referral to see an osteopath in Lisbon?
No referral is usually required; you can self-book with an osteopath in Lisbon. However, some private health insurers may ask for a GP or specialist referral to reimburse part of the fee, so check your policy’s terms before your first appointment.
Are there English-speaking osteopaths in Lisbon?
Yes, many osteopaths in Lisbon speak English and are accustomed to working with international professionals and expat families. When enquiring, confirm language availability and whether reports or exercises can be provided in English to ensure clear communication throughout your treatment and aftercare.
What should I expect at my first osteopathy appointment?
Your first visit usually includes a detailed medical history, postural and movement assessment, and hands-on treatment tailored to your symptoms. Expect 45, 60 minutes, comfortable clothing, and possibly home exercises or ergonomics advice. Mild soreness for a day or two is common and typically settles quickly.
Is osteopathy covered by insurance in Portugal?
Public healthcare (SNS) rarely covers osteopathy, but many Portuguese and international private health plans offer partial reimbursement for sessions. Coverage varies by insurer and policy tier, so check limits, referral requirements, and receipt formats needed for claims before you book with a Lisbon osteopath.
How do I choose a reliable osteopath in Lisbon?
Look for strong patient reviews, clear communication in English, and a personalised treatment plan rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. Consider specialisms such as sports injuries, pregnancy, paediatrics, or TMJ, and ensure the clinic environment is clean, professional, and transparent about follow-up and home exercise guidance.
What’s the difference between an osteopath, a chiropractor, and a physiotherapist?
All treat musculoskeletal pain, but osteopaths use a holistic approach combining joint, soft-tissue, and cranial techniques. Chiropractors often focus on spinal adjustments and specific joint manipulations. Physiotherapists emphasise evidence-based rehabilitation, exercise therapy, and modalities; many patients in Lisbon choose based on practitioner style, communication, and results.
Do osteopaths in Lisbon offer home visits or same-day appointments?
Some Lisbon osteopaths provide home visits or same-day slots, particularly for acute back or neck pain. Availability and travel radius vary, and home appointments usually carry a surcharge, so confirm times, fees, and any equipment or space requirements before booking.
Is osteopathy safe during pregnancy and for babies?
Yes, many osteopaths in Lisbon offer gentle techniques appropriate for pregnancy-related pain and paediatric concerns. Choose a practitioner with specific training in prenatal and paediatric osteopathy, and always share relevant medical history from your midwife, obstetrician, or paediatrician to ensure coordinated and safe care.
How many osteopathy sessions will I need?
For recent, straightforward issues, many people notice improvement within 2, 4 sessions, while chronic or complex problems may require 4, 8 or periodic maintenance. A good Lisbon osteopath will review progress regularly, adjust your plan, and provide exercises and ergonomic advice to help results last.

Dos and Don’ts as an expat

Key dos and don’ts for finding the ideal osteopath for your wellness journey

Do’s
Do Prioritize Personalized Treatment Plans
Seek out osteopaths who develop customized treatment plans tailored to your specific needs. A personalized approach ensures that the treatment you receive directly addresses your concerns, leading to more effective outcomes and better overall satisfaction.
Do Look for Professionalism and Clear Communication
Choose an osteopath who demonstrates professionalism and communicates clearly about treatment options and progress. Being kept informed helps build trust and ensures that you feel comfortable and supported throughout the entire process.
Do Consider Home Visit Options if Needed
If convenience is important to you, look for osteopaths who offer home visit services. This option can provide comfort and flexibility, making it easier for you to receive care without the hassles of traveling to a clinic.
Do Research About Their Holistic Approach
Select an osteopath who takes a holistic approach to treatment, considering your overall health and lifestyle. Providers who emphasize a comprehensive understanding of your body's needs can lead to more profound and lasting improvements in well-being.
Do Read Reviews on Cleanliness and Comfort of the Clinic
Before choosing an osteopath, check reviews that mention the cleanliness and ambiance of their clinic. An inviting and sanitary environment contributes to a more pleasant experience and can significantly impact your comfort during sessions.
Dont’s
Don't Ignore Personalization in Treatment Plans
Avoid choosing an osteopath who does not customize treatment plans based on individual needs. Generic treatments may not effectively address specific issues, leading to continued discomfort and ineffective outcomes.
Don't Settle for Poor Communication
Ensure you select an osteopath who prioritizes clear and open communication. Inadequate explanations about treatment processes and expectations can leave you feeling confused and dissatisfied with your care experience.
Don't Overlook Cleanliness and Comfort of the Clinic
Be cautious with osteopaths who operate in unclean or uncomfortable environments. A clean, welcoming clinic enhances your experience and reflects the professionalism and care of the practitioner.
Don't Underestimate the Importance of Follow-Up Care
It's crucial to choose an osteopath who provides comprehensive follow-up care and support. Lack of follow-up can hinder your recovery and lead to unresolved issues, leaving you without essential guidance after treatment.
