I hired her for physio treatments and she has been great. She comes every week to my place and it's always a great experience. I rate her highly on all aspects of the service.

Volkan

I’m an old professional athlete with permanent back and torn muscle issues, and I met Ferda through a friend. She’s very good at osteopathy and uses dry needles, and she resolved more or less 70-80% of my problems, so I still keep on seeing her. Sessions are long and intense at the start and then more like recovery touches, and she’s very on time - actually better than me - and the price felt very reasonable for the time she gives. Sometimes I think she could use a bigger place so people don’t wait, but overall she’s become a very permanent person in my life.

I was initially unsure about who to choose for my back and neck strain, but I'm glad I went with Mafalda. She responded quickly and was able to come to my place the next day, fully prepared and professional. My experience was so positive that when my mom had a knee issue, I recommended Mafalda to her too, and she was just as impressed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose an English-speaking physiotherapist in Lisbon?
Look for a physiotherapist in Lisbon with proven experience treating your specific condition and fluent English for clear communication. Check independent reviews, ask about their treatment approach, and confirm availability, location, and whether they offer home visits. Transparent pricing and a clear, goal-based plan are also key.
Do I need a doctor’s referral for physiotherapy in Lisbon?
Most private physiotherapy clinics in Lisbon do not require a GP referral, so you can book directly. However, some private health insurers ask for a referral to approve reimbursement. Public (SNS) physiotherapy typically needs a referral and may involve waiting lists.
How much does physiotherapy cost in Lisbon?
Typical private rates in Lisbon are around €50, €80 for an initial assessment and €35, €70 for follow-ups, with home visits often €60, €100. Specialist services like dry needling or lymphatic drainage may cost more. Prices are set by individual providers, and payments are made directly to the clinic.
What should I expect at my first physiotherapy session?
Your first appointment usually includes a detailed history, physical assessment, and a tailored plan with clear goals. Treatment may combine manual therapy, exercise prescription, education, and advice on posture or pain management. Wear comfortable clothing and bring any medical reports or imaging.
Do physiotherapists in Lisbon offer home visits or telehealth?
Many Lisbon physiotherapists provide home visits (domiciliary care) and video consultations, helpful after surgery or for mobility issues. Ask about their travel areas, availability, and any additional fees for home appointments. Ensure they can supply portable equipment and a safe setup if needed.
Is physiotherapy covered by private health insurance in Lisbon?
Coverage varies by insurer and policy. Many clinics provide receipts for reimbursement, and some accept direct billing, but you may need a doctor’s referral. Check session limits, co-payments, and claim procedures with your insurer; you’ll typically pay the clinic and claim back if eligible.
How can I verify a physiotherapist’s quality and credibility?
Review client feedback, ask about experience with your condition, and request a clear treatment plan with measurable goals. Confirm they communicate effectively in English and use evidence-based methods. Professional registration, ongoing training, punctuality, and a clean, well-organised clinic are strong quality indicators.
Which conditions do Lisbon physiotherapists commonly treat?
Physiotherapists in Lisbon frequently treat back and neck pain, sports injuries, sciatica, tendon issues, and post-surgical rehabilitation. Many also offer women’s health and pelvic floor therapy, neurological rehab, and posture or ergonomic support. Treatments can include manual therapy, targeted exercise, dry needling, taping, and lymphatic drainage.
How many physiotherapy sessions will I need for recovery?
It depends on your condition, severity, and adherence to exercises. Acute problems can improve in 3, 6 sessions, while chronic conditions may need 8, 12 or a longer management plan. Your physiotherapist should set clear milestones and regularly review progress to optimise outcomes.
Do physiotherapists in Lisbon speak languages other than Portuguese?
Yes. Due to Lisbon’s international community, many physiotherapists speak English and often other languages such as Spanish, French, or German. Always confirm language proficiency when booking to ensure you receive clear explanations, correct exercise instruction, and effective follow-up communication.

Dos and Don’ts as an expat

Key dos and don’ts for finding the ideal physiotherapist to support your journey to recovery

Do’s
Do Seek Personalized Care
Look for physiotherapists who take the time to understand your individual needs and tailor their treatments accordingly. Providers who engage in thorough consultations and ask thoughtful questions often deliver more effective and targeted therapy.
Do Prioritize Communication Skills
Choose a physiotherapist who excels in communication, ensuring they explain their treatment processes clearly and regularly check in on your comfort and understanding. Good communication fosters a better therapeutic alliance, leading to improved outcomes.
Do Consider Home Visit Options
For added convenience, look for physiotherapists who offer home visits. This convenience can enhance your experience and commitment to treatment, while also making it easier to fit sessions into your busy schedule without the need for travel.
Do Evaluate Punctuality and Reliability
Select a physiotherapist known for their punctuality and reliability. A therapist who consistently arrives on time demonstrates professionalism and respect for your schedule, contributing to a smoother treatment experience.
Do Assess Value for Money
Investigate the pricing structure of physiotherapy providers to ensure you receive a fair value for the services rendered. Look for those who offer good-quality treatment at competitive prices, thereby optimizing your investment in health.
Dont’s
Don't Ignore Punctuality and Responsiveness
Choose a physiotherapist who consistently arrives on time and is responsive to your inquiries. Delays or poor communication can hinder your treatment progress and leave you feeling undervalued as a patient.
Don't Settle for Generic Treatments
Avoid physiotherapists who do not tailor their treatments to your specific needs. Personalized care enhances effectiveness, and a one-size-fits-all approach may lead to unresolved issues and frustration.
Don't Choose Based on Price Alone
While affordability is important, selecting a physiotherapist solely based on lower pricing can compromise quality of care. Focus on the reputation and expertise of the provider to ensure you receive effective treatment.
Don't Overlook Cleanliness and Organization
Ensure that the physiotherapy clinic or home service provider maintains a clean and organized environment. Hygiene is essential for safe treatments, and a cluttered or dirty space can negatively impact your overall experience.
