Sofie
Lisbon on Mar 2025
We brought in Alice to do a live painting during an exhibition in Lisbon to compliment a live performance. She set up easily, told us what we needed, painted while a dancer and a girl singing performed, and she interacted with people but kept working, really capturing the essence of the event and the artist. The painting reflected the ocean and water theme, this blue line where you kind of see a mermaid person inside, and it sold right after the show. We even used it later in a workshop to project AI on top of it, and I loved how she stayed true to her own style while fitting perfectly into the scene.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find and vet an English‑speaking web designer in Lisbon?
Start by reviewing portfolios for similar industries, responsive builds, and measurable results. Check independent reviews and ask for two recent client references. During a discovery call, assess communication, process (sitemap, wireframes, QA), and reporting. Request a clear proposal with scope, timelines and maintenance so expectations are transparent from day one.
What are typical web design prices in Lisbon?
Costs vary widely by scope and provider. In Lisbon, a simple brochure site may range from €1,000, €4,000; bespoke or multi‑language sites €3,000, €10,000+; e‑commerce often €4,000, €20,000+. Hourly rates typically €40, €120. Prices are set by each web designer, and you pay them directly; rates aren’t listed on directories.
How long does a website project usually take in Lisbon?
Timelines depend on complexity and how quickly you provide content. A small brochure site can take 2, 6 weeks; larger, custom or e‑commerce builds often run 6, 12+ weeks. Agree milestones, feedback windows and a launch checklist to keep delivery predictable and avoid scope creep.
Which CMS is best for my project (WordPress, Shopify, Webflow, Squarespace)?
Choose the platform that matches your goals and budget. WordPress offers flexibility and Portuguese payment integrations; Shopify suits e‑commerce with managed hosting; Webflow and Squarespace favour design speed and simplicity. For Lisbon audiences, confirm multilingual support, SEO control, and compatibility with local gateways such as Multibanco and MB Way.
Can Lisbon web designers build multilingual (English, Portuguese) websites?
Yes, most Lisbon web designers regularly deliver bilingual or multilingual sites. Ask for proper hreflang tags, language switchers, and translation workflows (manual or via integrations). Clarify whether they’ll localise Portuguese (Portugal) rather than Brazilian Portuguese, and how they’ll structure content for SEO across markets.
Will my website be GDPR‑compliant and accessible in the EU?
For EU compliance, ensure cookie consent, privacy policy links, data‑collection disclosures, and secure forms. Discuss accessibility to at least WCAG 2.1 AA, including contrast, keyboard navigation and alt text. Your designer can implement the mechanics, while you provide lawful policies and decide which trackers you actually need.
What should a solid web design contract include?
Expect a written scope with deliverables, timelines, number of revisions, and acceptance criteria. It should define ownership of IP, source files, and CMS admin rights, plus domain/hosting arrangements. Include warranty period, post‑launch support, change‑request process, and staged payments tied to milestones.
Do Lisbon web designers provide hosting and ongoing maintenance?
Many Lisbon freelancers and agencies offer hosting and maintenance as add‑ons. Typical plans cover updates, backups, security monitoring, uptime checks and small content changes. Confirm response times, what’s included/excluded, monthly costs, and who owns the hosting account if you decide to move providers later.
How do payments and invoices typically work with Lisbon‑based designers?
Most designers request a deposit (often 30, 50%), with further payments at agreed milestones and final sign‑off. Invoices are usually in euros; Portuguese VAT (IVA, 23% in mainland Portugal) may apply. Payment methods vary, but are arranged directly with the provider, bank transfer, card or gateway by agreement.
Can I work remotely with a Lisbon web designer if I’m abroad?
Absolutely. Lisbon web designers frequently collaborate with expats via video calls, WhatsApp and shared project tools. Ask for a communication plan, timezone overlap, staging links for review, and recorded demos, so you can progress the build smoothly even if you’re travelling or not yet in Portugal.

Dos and Don’ts as an expat
Smart choices: dos and don'ts for hiring the perfect web designer
Do’s
Do Seek a Provider Who Understands Your Vision
Prioritize hiring web designers who take the time to grasp your project vision. A successful collaboration hinges on their ability to translate your ideas into a design that meets or exceeds your expectations.
Do Look for Responsiveness and Communication Skills
Choose service providers known for their quick responses and clear communication. A designer who promptly addresses concerns and keeps you updated will enhance your overall experience and ensure smooth project execution.
Do Consider Their Problem-Solving Abilities
Select designers who demonstrate efficiency in resolving issues. Look for feedback indicating their capability to tackle hiccups effectively, ensuring deadlines are met without compromising quality.
Do Value Expertise in User-Friendly Design
Ensure your chosen web designer has a proven track record in creating intuitive and user-friendly websites. This aspect significantly impacts user experience and can directly affect the success of your digital presence.
Do Assess Their Experience with Diverse Projects
Opt for service providers with a diverse portfolio that showcases their ability to handle various project types. Experience with different industries can enhance their adaptability and creativity in meeting your needs.
Dont’s
Don't Ignore Portfolio Diversity
When hiring a web designer, do not overlook the variety in their portfolio. A designer with a limited range of work may not effectively meet your unique needs or vision, potentially leading to a result that doesn’t align with your expectations.
Don't Assume Communication Will Be Smooth
Do not take for granted that your web designer will communicate effectively during the project. Poor communication can lead to misunderstandings, delays, and unmet expectations, so ensure that they have a proven track record of responsiveness.
Don't Skip Technical Competency
Avoid hiring a web designer without verifying their technical skills. Lack of expertise in crucial areas such as SEO, mobile responsiveness, and software can hinder your website’s performance, causing issues that affect user experience.
Don't Rely Solely on Initial Impressions
Do not make a decision based purely on your first meeting with a web designer. Initial chemistry might be misleading; assess their previous work, client feedback, and problem-solving skills to gauge their long-term reliability.
