I took my autistic daughter, she is six now, to this center starting with diagnostics when she wasn’t talking by around two and a half, and we’ve been going about three and a half years. They did the diagnostic tests and then started occupational therapy, neurofeedback and other things, first one day a week and now four days a week with one day off, no more kindergarten. I love that they have a multidisciplinary team and that we are totally informed every day through their portal with short notes and photos, and we also have meetings twice a year with the main teachers and a coordinator to set goals and review progress, and before they also met with her kindergarten teachers. We are absolutely happy and I think her progress over the last two years relies a lot on the work they do.

I used the psychology service for my daughter, and what we like is the family approach, plus they combine functional neurology with things like biofeedback, which helped accelerate her progress. The environment is comfortable and very professional, the therapy is personalized, and being able to do it in English with someone trained in the UK was a big advantage. Scheduling was easy and flexible, we got clear protocols to do at home, and after less than a year she finished and was discharged. Price value is very good.

I have my whole family in therapy here - I do psychological therapy, my son does speech and occupational therapy, and my daughter has psychological therapy and is starting pedagogical therapy to learn how to learn. They have an amazing team, very polite and very friendly, smart people with good results; my daughter went from two sessions per week to one because she improved a lot, and I also get parental guidance to handle her situation. The place is next to the train station, easy even from Barcelona, and my son goes in happy and leaves happy. Price feels fair and convenient, not too expensive, and I highly recommend Corien and the team.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does an occupational therapist do, and how can they help expats in Barcelona?
Occupational therapists help you perform everyday activities more safely and independently after injury, illness, or life changes. For expats in Barcelona, they address challenges such as navigating new homes, work routines, and transport, offering tailored strategies, equipment recommendations, and skills training. They also coordinate with schools or employers to support smooth integration.
Do I need a referral to see a private occupational therapist in Barcelona?
Private occupational therapy in Barcelona usually does not require a GP or specialist referral, so you can contact a therapist directly. For publicly funded services through the Catalan Health Service, a medical referral and waiting list are typical. If you hold private or international insurance, check whether a referral letter is needed for reimbursement.
How much does occupational therapy cost in Barcelona?
Costs vary by provider and speciality. As a guide, initial assessments often range from €60, €120, standard 45, 60 minute sessions from €40, €80, and home or neurological visits from €70, €120. Prices are set by the individual therapist, paid directly to them, and are not listed on Locallista.
How can I check the quality and credentials of an occupational therapist in Barcelona?
Look for a university degree in Occupational Therapy and membership of the Col·legi de Terapeutes Ocupacionals de Catalunya (COTOC). Ask about experience with your condition, outcome measures used, and evidence-based approaches. Review recent client feedback, confirm languages offered, and request a written treatment plan with clear goals and timelines.
Are English-speaking occupational therapists available in Barcelona?
Yes. Barcelona has many English-speaking and bilingual occupational therapists, and international clinics often provide additional languages. Confirm your preferred language during the enquiry, and ask whether reports, invoices, and home programmes can be provided in English. Many therapists also offer telehealth consultations for flexibility when travelling or juggling work commitments.
What should I expect at my first occupational therapy assessment?
Your first appointment typically lasts 60, 90 minutes and includes a detailed history, functional assessments, and goal setting. The therapist may observe tasks such as dressing, writing, or computer use, and recommend initial strategies or equipment. You’ll receive a plan outlining frequency, anticipated outcomes, and how progress will be measured.
What’s the difference between occupational therapy and physiotherapy?
Occupational therapy focuses on helping you perform meaningful daily activities, using task practice, environmental adaptations, and equipment to improve independence. Physiotherapy concentrates more on restoring movement, strength, and biomechanics. In rehabilitation, both often collaborate, OT targets functional tasks, while physio addresses underlying physical impairments that enable those tasks.
Are home visits and workplace ergonomic assessments available in Barcelona?
Yes. Many occupational therapists in Barcelona offer home visits, workplace assessments, and ergonomic consultations, particularly helpful for remote workers and families with accessibility needs. These services assess your environment and recommend adaptations or equipment; travel and assessment time may increase the overall fee compared with in-clinic sessions.
Does health insurance cover occupational therapy for expats in Barcelona?
Coverage depends on your policy. Spain’s public system provides occupational therapy with a medical referral, but waiting times vary. Many private and international insurance plans reimburse private sessions if you submit invoices and clinical reports; confirm pre-authorisation, session limits, and documentation requirements with your insurer before booking.
How long are sessions and how many will I need?
Standard sessions are usually 45, 60 minutes, though complex neurological or paediatric cases may require longer. The number of sessions depends on your goals and diagnosis, short-term issues might resolve in 4, 8 visits, while long-term conditions may need a structured block of 6, 12 sessions with periodic reviews.
Selecting the appropriate occupational therapist is crucial for your rehabilitation journey and overall well-being. It’s not just about finding someone with the right qualifications; it’s about establishing a collaborative partnership built on trust and clear communication. By adhering to these dos and don’ts, you can navigate the choices with confidence, ensuring that you engage with a professional who not only understands your specific requirements but also has a proven track record of helping clients like you. With the right support, you can make meaningful strides towards regaining your independence and enhancing your quality of life.
Dos and Don’ts as an expat
Expert tips: dos and don’ts for selecting the right occupational therapist
Do’s
Do Seek Qualified Credentials
When considering an occupational therapist, prioritize those with recognized qualifications and certifications. This ensures you are receiving care from a professional who meets the industry standards and is equipped with the latest techniques and knowledge to support your rehabilitation.
Do Inquire About Customized Treatment Plans
Look for therapists that offer personalized treatment plans tailored to your specific needs and goals. A good occupational therapist will assess your unique situation and create a comprehensive program to help you regain independence and improve functionality.
Do Ask for Testimonials and Success Stories
Request feedback from previous clients or look for reviews that highlight successful outcomes. Hearing about others' positive experiences can provide insight into the therapist's effectiveness and help build your confidence in their ability to assist you.
Do Evaluate Communication Style
Choose an occupational therapist who communicates clearly and effectively. Establishing good rapport with your therapist is essential for a successful therapeutic alliance, making it easier to discuss your concerns and progress throughout your treatment.
Dont’s
Don't Choose a Provider Without Verified Credentials
Selecting an occupational therapist without confirmed credentials may lead to subpar services or ineffective treatment plans. Always verify that the therapist is licensed and holds relevant qualifications to ensure the safety and efficacy of therapy.
Don't Overlook Reviews and Testimonials
Neglecting to read reviews or ask for testimonials could result in choosing a provider with a track record of unsatisfactory care or unprofessional conduct. Take the time to research experiences of previous clients to avoid potential disappointment.
Don't Ignore Communication Style and Approach
Failing to assess the therapist's communication style may lead to misunderstandings or a lack of connection during therapy. Ensure the provider’s approach aligns with your needs and expectations to facilitate a productive therapeutic relationship.
Don't Assume All Therapists Are Equally Equipped for Your Condition
Not all occupational therapists specialize in the same areas. Relying on a generalist instead of one with expertise in your specific condition may hinder progress. Confirm that the therapist has relevant experience and success in treating your particular needs.
