I asked Ricardo to design and install a wardrobe, a bed, a desk and some shelves for my son's room. He respected my budget, even looked for solutions within it, and he gave his opinions but if I said no he was like ok, perfect. The work met the deadlines and was actually faster than I thought, and communication and treatment were really kind. Price felt fair and the whole experience was perfect for me.

I was looking for a carpenter because in my old apartment the built-in wardrobe didn’t have standard measurements and was completely ruined. Ricardo came, saw the apartment, and made a custom wardrobe from scratch, with drawers and the color I asked for, adapted because the building isn’t straight. He also made a shelf for the pantry. He was very honest about other things: under the sink there was some damaged wood and he told me it could hold up, and with another piece of furniture that might have moisture damage he recommended calling a mason first, and then he would come back to take measurements and fix whatever was needed. The price seemed fair to me and the wardrobe works perfectly; I’ve already told him that the next one I have done will be with him.

I hired Ricardo to make custom closets at home: two small ones in the main room, a fairly large closet in the corridor, and a fairly large one in the guest room. He came with samples to choose finishes, sent me diagrams over WhatsApp, took precise measurements, and we agreed on a deadline because I needed everything done before May 1, and he finished just in time. The quality-price relationship was the best of the four I compared, and he was professional, listened to my feedback, and came later to improve two or three little things, although I wanted one closet with a mirror and that was a bit outside what he could do so we agreed on another finish. Overall, pretty good and I recommend him.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find an English-speaking kitchen carpenter in Barcelona?
Look for kitchen carpenters in Barcelona who explicitly offer English-speaking service and provide quotes, drawings, and WhatsApp updates in English. Check reviews from other expats and portfolios of similar kitchen installations. Arrange a site visit to confirm they understand your brief, materials, and timeline before agreeing a start date.
How should I vet a kitchen carpenter for quality and reliability?
Ask to see a recent portfolio, verified reviews, and two client references for kitchen joinery or installation. Insist on a detailed, written scope with materials, timelines, and payment milestones, plus proof of liability insurance. A measured survey and design drawings reduce surprises and help lock in a realistic quote.
How much does a kitchen carpenter cost in Barcelona?
In Barcelona, kitchen carpenters typically charge 35, 60€ per hour or provide fixed project quotes. Labour to install a small to medium flat‑pack kitchen often ranges 700, 2,000€, while bespoke cabinetry can be 350, 800€ per linear metre. Prices are set by individual carpenters, and you pay them directly.
Do I need a permit to change kitchen cabinets in Barcelona?
Replacing like‑for‑like kitchen cabinets usually needs no permit in Barcelona. Moving walls, altering plumbing or electrics, changing extraction, or opening to another room may require a licencia de obras and approval from your comunidad de propietarios. Confirm with the Ayuntamiento before work starts; you’re responsible for securing any permissions.
How long does a kitchen installation typically take?
A straightforward flat‑pack kitchen installation typically takes 3, 7 working days once all materials are on site. Bespoke kitchens involving design, fabrication, finishing, and fitting can take 4, 8 weeks, plus lead time for worktops or appliances. Timelines lengthen in August and around holidays, so plan well in advance.
Can carpenters in Barcelona install IKEA or flat‑pack kitchens?
Most carpenters in Barcelona can install IKEA or other flat‑pack kitchens. Ensure they handle accurate measuring, levelling, and scribing to uneven walls, coordinate necessary plumbing and electrical points, and manage worktop cutting or templating. Ask for a fixed installation plan with clear inclusions and a post‑fit adjustment visit.
Will the carpenter supply materials, or should I buy them?
Some kitchen carpenters supply units and materials; others fit client‑purchased cabinets from local or international brands. If you’re buying, request a detailed cut list or SKU list to prevent delays and missing fittings. Clarify who orders worktops, hinges, and handles, and confirm delivery windows to lock in dates.
How can I manage communication if I don’t speak Spanish or Catalan?
Choose an English‑speaking kitchen carpenter and agree your preferred channel, WhatsApp, phone, or email, for quick updates. Ask for bilingual quotes, drawings, and a schedule in English to avoid misunderstandings. Share measurements in metric, photos, and inspiration links so your Barcelona carpenter aligns with your design, budget, and timeline.
Are waste removal and recycling included in a kitchen installation?
In Barcelona, construction waste must be handled correctly; many carpenters offer removal of old cabinets and packaging for an additional fee. Confirm whether recycling, municipal tip charges, lift protection, and site cleaning are included in the quote. Agree who disconnects and disposes of old appliances before installation begins.
What guarantees or aftercare should I expect from a kitchen carpenter?
Expect a written workmanship guarantee and a defined snagging period for adjustments after your kitchen installation. Manufacturer warranties typically cover hinges, runners, and appliances, while stone worktops are warranted by the fabricator. Keep care instructions for timber and finishes to maintain durability and validate any product guarantees.

Dos and Don’ts as an expat

Essential dos and don’ts for selecting the perfect carpenter for your kitchen

Do’s
Do Review Their Portfolio of Kitchen Projects
When hiring a carpenter for your kitchen, always ask for a portfolio of their previous work. Reviewing past projects provides insights into their style, craftsmanship, and versatility. This will help you understand if their experience aligns with your design vision and quality expectations.
Do Seek Out Customer References
Before making a decision, request references from previous clients who have had similar kitchen projects completed. Speaking with these past customers will give you an idea of the carpenter's work ethic, reliability, and overall satisfaction of their clients, ensuring you make an informed hiring choice.
Do Discuss Clear Timelines and Budgets
Establishing a clear timeline and budget upfront is crucial when working with a carpenter for your kitchen. Good carpenters will provide you with a detailed estimate and timeline, helping you avoid unexpected delays and costs. Ensure everything is documented for transparency.
Do Inquire About Material Options
An excellent carpenter should be knowledgeable about various materials and their suitability for your kitchen project. Discuss different options available for cabinetry, countertops, and finishes, and seek their recommendations based on durability, aesthetics, and budget to ensure long-lasting results.
Dont’s
Don't Hire a Carpenter Without a Portfolio
Hiring a carpenter without examining their portfolio can lead to disappointing results. A lack of showcased work may indicate insufficient experience or quality. Always request examples of previous kitchen projects to ensure their style and craftsmanship align with your expectations.
Don't Ignore Customer Reviews and Testimonials
Failing to research customer reviews can result in choosing a carpenter with a poor reputation for reliability or quality. Take the time to read testimonials and check online ratings to gauge others' experiences before making a commitment. This can save time, money, and frustration.
Don't Skip the Written Estimate
Neglecting to obtain a written estimate can result in unexpected costs later on. Ensure all details, such as materials used and labor costs, are clearly outlined in the quote. A lack of a formal estimate can lead to misunderstandings about the project's scope and price.
Don't Overlook Communication Skills
Choosing a carpenter with poor communication skills can lead to a frustrating renovation process. Clear communication is essential for understanding your vision and addressing any concerns. Make sure the carpenter can articulate their ideas and listen to your needs effectively.
